Default Suspect in Blaze Bernstein Case Accused of Murdering Jewish Sodomite Classmate Because He Was Gay

New Details Emerge In Death Of Blaze Bernstein
January 15, 2018 at 11:32 pm

IRVINE (CBSLA) — There was strong reaction Monday night from Foothill Ranch neighbors as new details emerged in the murder case of Blaze Bernstein, just hours before his private memorial. The parents of the 20-year-old said on the day they laid their son to rest, they are saddened by gruesome details that have been reported on how he was killed.

“Today should have been a day to honor Blaze,” neighbor Rebecca Weiskittel said. “At the end of the day, Blaze was the victim and there was no reason to put any shadow of doubt in that.”

The Orange County Register reported Monday night that in a possible act of rage, Blaze Bernstein’s former high school classmate, 20-year-old Sam Woodward stabbed him 20 times after he picked him up at his Foothill Ranch home on Jan. 2.

The Register claims detectives found Bernstein’s blood on a sleeping bag in the back of Woodward’s rental car.

Last summer Bernstein told two female friends about an interaction with Woodward. The Newport Beach man was arrested on suspicion of murder last Friday.

In one conversation, Bernstein wrote that Woodward was about to hit on him and was told not to tell anyone. “But I have texted everyone, uh oh,” he wrote.

The register also reported Woodward told investigators that Bernstein kissed him on the lips and that he pushed Bernstein away.

On Monday night parents Jeanne and Gideon Bernstein released the following statement:

We are saddened to hear, on the day we laid our son to rest, that gruesome details of the cause of his death were published. Our son was a beautiful gentle soul who we loved more than anything. We were proud of everything he did and who he was. He had nothing to hide. We are in solidarity with our son and the LGBTQ community. There is still much discovery to be done and if it is determined that this was a hate crime, we will cry not only for our son, but for LGBTQ people everywhere that live in fear or who have been victims of hate crime.

IRVINE (CBSLA) — Friends and family gathered at University Synagogue in Irvine on Monday to remember 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein.

The University of Penn student disappeared on Jan. 2 while visiting home on winter break.

With 850 people in attendance to pay their respects, the 19-year-old was buried Monday morning, six days after his body was found at Borrego Park in Foothill Ranch.

Authorities say Bernstein went to the park at night with his high school friend, Sam Woodward, and disappeared.

Officials say Woodward was the last person to have seen Blaze alive.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A man suspected in the killing of a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student who was stabbed nearly two dozen times and buried in a shallow grave at a California park told investigators that he was being hit on, a newspaper reported.

Samuel Lincoln Woodward , 20, was arrested and taken into custody Friday on suspicion of homicide after DNA evidence linked him to the death of, Blaze Bernstein , a college sophomore, Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said.

The Orange County Register reported that Blaze Bernstein was stabbed more than 20 times. No weapon has been found.

Carrie Braun, a public information officer for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, would not confirm to The Associated Press if Blaze Bernstein was stabbed, but said “the condition of the body at the time it was discovered turned it from a missing person to a homicide immediately.”

Bernstein may have been planning to sexually pursue Woodward, according to a 16-page search warrant affidavit obtained by The Orange County Register.

Bernstein texted two female friends about a June interaction with Woodward, according to the affidavit. Bernstein wrote that Woodward was about to “hit on me” and “he made me promise not to tell anyone.”

Bernstein was home visiting his family in Lake Forest during winter break when Woodward picked him up on Jan. 2 and drove with him to several places before winding up at a park.

The two knew each other from high school, Barnes said.

The affidavit also noted that Woodward told investigators that Bernstein kissed him on the lips at a stop before the park, and that he pushed Bernstein away.

Investigators said in the affidavit that as he recounted that part of his story, Woodward clenched his jaw and his fists, saying “he wanted to tell Blaze to get off of him.”

Woodward was interviewed by investigators after Bernstein was reported missing by his parents on Jan. 3.

A sheriff’s investigator wrote in court filings that Woodward appeared nervous, had scratched hands and dirt under his fingernails, and avoided touching doors with his hands while leaving the sheriff’s office building.

Woodward also told investigators that Bernstein walked into the park alone and then he waited for Bernstein for an hour before driving to meet with a girlfriend, the Register reported. He also said told investigators that he returned to the park to look for Bernstein hours later. However, according to the affidavit, Woodward could not remember his girlfriend’s last name or where she lived.

It was not immediately possible to reach Woodward in custody, where he listed his occupation as “Nerf games,” according to the jail’s website.

Authorities searched for Bernstein for nearly a week with assistance from drone pilots and found his body on Tuesday after recent rains partially exposed it.

The death of Bernstein rocked the community of Lake Forest, 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. Hundreds of people held a candlelight vigil to remember him.

It was the only homicide reported in Lake Forest in at least the past four years, according to authorities.

Suspect in Blaze Bernstein Case Accused of Murdering Classmate Because He Was Gay
"We will prove that Woodward killed Blaze because Blaze is gay," Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

The Orange County district attorney's office announced Thursday an amended criminal complaint in the murder of college student Blaze Bernstein. The hate crime enhancement against Samuel Woodward alleges the now 21-year-old murdered his former high school classmate because he was gay.

"We will prove that Woodward killed Blaze because Blaze is gay," OCDA Tony Rackauckas said at a news conference.

It enhances Woodward's possible maximum sentence from 26 years to life in prison to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Bernstein went missing late Jan. 2 after Woodward picked him up from his parents' home in Lake Forest. Bernstein, who was on winter break from the University of Pennsylvania, knew Woodward from attending Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana together.

Following an eight-day investigation, Bernstein's body -- which was stabbed multiple times -- was found in a shallow grave in Borrego Park in Lake Forest.

Woodward was arrested days later on Jan. 12 at his Newport Beach home.

On Jan. 17, he was officially charged with one felony count of murder.

"We live in a world where hate is real and the people that practice it can be hiding in your home in your child’s computer. We continue to look towards the future and what we can do to make a difference. We continue to Blaze it forward for Blaze and for YOU and continuing his legacy of improving the human condition ; One intentional act of kindness at a time," Blaze's mother Jeanne said.

The hate crime enhancement alleges Woodward carried out the killing due to Bernstein's sexual orientation.

It's "appropriate" due to the evidence found on the suspect's cellphone, laptop and social media, Rackauckas said.

"All of this revealed the dark side of Woodward's thoughts and intentions."

Rackauckas added that the digital evidence contained "graphic, chilling" images and "can be described as spewing hate toward almost every protected group." He said the texts and photos were racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and anti-government.

There could be additional charges filed as evidence develops, the district attorney said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information that would help prove Woodward's membership in an organization that promotes hate was asked to contact OCDA Homicide Unit Supervising Investigator Kory Degraffenreid at 714-347-8492.
