Man charged in fatal South Bend stabbing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Richard Lee Alexander has been arrested and charged in connection with the South Bend stabbing death of 37-year-old Catherine Minix.

Minix' body was found Sunday in the 900 block of Fairview.

Alexander was arrested on an outstanding warrant and is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

He is charged with murder, a felony; and invasion of privacy, a class A misdemeanor.

Alexander’s initial hearing and arraignment are scheduled for Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Police say the Minix and Alexander had a history of domestic violence issues, and charging documents indicate that a No Contact Order was in place preventing the two interacting. Those documents also allege that after stabbing Minix, Alexander went to his ex-wife’s home and told her he was going to prison. When asked why he said that, Alexander told her “Because I killed the b****".

Bobbi Fein, a friend of Minix, says that two had been dating at one point but were no longer together and Catherine was ready to move on when Richard Alexander allegedly stabbed and killed her.

“Its going to be hard. I’ll miss that loudness that she has, the joking, but like I said in the beginning I’m going to fight her fight and get her justice that she deserves, and I know she’s watching,” Fein says.

When asked if she had a message to Alexander she struggled to hold back.

“I don’t think I can say it on TV. I hope that he can, genuinely, be sorry for what he’s done. It didn’t have to go this far. Not at all, I can’t say what I would really like to say, its just that simple."

Richard Alexander was arrested in connection with four sexual assaults that took place during the summer of 1996, in South Bend, Indiana. He was eventually tried for three of the assaults and convicted of two of them. After mitochondrial DNA testing performed in 2001 excluded him as the assailant in one of the incidents, he was exonerated of both crimes and released from prison.
