Default Morristown, NJ negro rapist is offered 5 years in prison

Lake Hopatcong man accused of Morristown rape is offered 5 years in prison
Updated 3:23 p.m. ET April 21, 2020

A Lake Hopatcong man accused of raping a woman in Morristown could spend five years in prison under a plea deal offered Monday.

Zaayir McCoy, 22, allegedly sexually assaulted the woman behind two homes on Spring Street in June 2018 after meeting her at a bar. He was not linked to the alleged rape until a year later, when police obtained a photo of McCoy and found him in Summit police custody on an unrelated matter, according to court records.

Joseph Scura, McCoy’s attorney, said during Monday's online hearing that he needs to consider McCoy’s outstanding charges in other counties before deciding on the plea offer.

Summit police charged McCoy with harassment and burglary in May 2019 after he allegedly broke into a woman's home by climbing through a window, according to court documents. The woman told police that McCoy appeared in her bedroom and tried to talk to her even though she had previously barred him from her residence.

McCoy, a convicted sex offender, was also charged with failing to register as a sex offender when he moved from Summit to Morris County and failing to report for an annual address verification meeting with police, according to court documents. He was convicted of aggravated sexual assault in 2011.
