Ice cream man gets 25 years for raping 14-year-old in his truck

An Atlanta ice cream man with a lengthy rap sheet was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a 14-year-old in the back of his truck, prosecutors said.

Khabir Daniel, 45, was convicted of child molestation, statutory rape, aggravated child molestation, sodomy and enticing a child for indecent purposes, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

He was arrested in July 2018 after Atlanta police responded to a suspicious person call on Carter Street, said Chris Hopper, spokesman for the DA’s office. The 911 caller told dispatchers there was an ice cream truck parked in a vacant lot near his home that appeared to be rocking back and forth, prosecutors said.

The other person in the truck turned out to be a 14-year-old girl that Daniel hired to work in the truck 10 days earlier. In an interview with police, she told them her boss raped and molested her.

Daniel has 28 previous arrests and six felony convictions, Hopper said, including convictions for burglary, drug possession and child molestation.

While in jail, the ice cream man reportedly called his wife and said he knew he should have stayed away from the 14-year-old, but that “she was like a drug.”

Officers knocked on the door and Daniel told them he was stocking shelves with his “girlfriend,” authorities said.
