Sex offender charged with attempted murder in shooting of Cleveland police officer with assault rifle
Updated November 5, 2018

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A registered sex offender accused of shooting a Cleveland police officer with an assault rifle is being held in the county jail on $1 million bond after his first court appearance on Monday.

Jonathan Chambers, 30, is charged with three counts of attempted murder. He did not enter a plea at his Monday appearance in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Chambers shot 28-year-old Cleveland police officer Shane McNae, who has been a police officer for nearly five years. McNae underwent surgery on both legs on Saturday and is in stable condition
at University Hospitals.

Cleveland Municipal Judge Michelle Earley ordered Chambers to have no contact with the initial shooting victim and to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is a father of four who lives with his mother in Cleveland.

Chambers about 4 a.m. Saturday shot a man in the neck as the man sat in a car on East 121st Street near Shaker Boulevard in the city’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood.

McNea and his partner, patrol officer Christian Childs, arrived to investigate, according to police. Chambers opened fire on their marked police cruiser with an assault rifle. Bullets ripped through the cruiser and both of McNea’s legs, according to court records. Childs was not injured.

Officers brought McNea to an ambulance where he was treated and taken to the hospital. Chambers ran away and was arrested hours later by Cleveland police’s gang unit.

Chambers has a criminal history that includes a conviction that requires him to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to two years of probation that ended in January 2018 after he pleaded guilty in a 2016 case of having weapons while under disability.

Chambers was indicted in 2010 on two counts of rape, kidnapping, sexual imposition and aggravated assault. He pleaded guilty to sexual imposition and aggravated assault, and the rape and kidnapping charges were dropped. He was sentenced to 18 months at the Lorain Correctional Institute and released after 10 months, court records show.

Chambers also has convictions of carrying concealed weapons, drug-related offenses and disorderly conduct, according to Cleveland Municipal Court and Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court records.

He was charged with domestic violence and aggravated menacing in August 2018 but the case was dropped Oct. 30.
