A suspect was arrested in the slaying of a Google executive from New York – who played a key role in the capture of her own killer, Massachusetts officials said Saturday.
Angelo Colon Ortiz, a 31-year-old Worcester resident, was arrested on Friday night after his DNA matched that found on victim Vanessa Marcotte’s hands, officials said.
“Good afternoon, we got him,” Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. told reporters to the cheers of bystanders.
After thanking a laundry list of law enforcement agencies, Early singled out the victim and how she played the key role in Ortiz’s arrest.
“There is also one other person I’d like to thank in this case, that would be Vanessa Marcotte,” Early said. “It was through her determined fight and her efforts that we obtained the DNA of her killer.”
Marcotte was visiting her mom in Princeton, Mass., when she went out for a jog the afternoon of Aug. 7. Her body was found hours later in nearby woods.
The 27-year-old Google accounts manager’s slaying followed the Aug. 2 murder of Queens resident Karina Vetrano.
Vetrano, 30, was also out jogging when she vanished, though no solid connections were ever made between the two murders, 200 miles apart.
Massachusetts authorities announced on Feb. 23 they had recovered DNA of the suspect in Marcotte’s killing — and that it didn’t match Chanel Lewis, the Brooklyn man arrested in Vetrano’s killing.
Early eyewitnesses accounts noted a dark SUV driven by a Hispanic male near Marcotte’s murder scene.
A state trooper recently spotted an SUV matching that description and the lawman – without a piece of paper in reach – wrote the license plate number on his hand, according to Early.
Detectives eventually found Ortiz, who gave up a cheek swab of his DNA which led to his arrest, the DA said.
Ortiz has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault with intent to commit rape. His first court appearance is set for Tuesday.
Those who find the truth hateful just hate hearing the truth.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.....on a nigger.
If you're not catching flak, you're not over the target.
