Christopher Fonville, 28, identified as victim in fatal Springfield shooting
Updated 7:22 PM 3/25/2020

SPRINGFIELD — Christopher Fonville died Monday night at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after being shot multiple times on March 16, according to a spokesman for the Hampden district attorney’s office.

Isaiah Taylor, 22, was charged with murder in connection with Fonville’s slaying. That shooting occurred at the intersection of Carew and Chestnut streets at 11:30 a.m. that day.

Taylor also faces charges in an alleged attempted murder on March 24 — a shooting on Clifton Avenue in this city — as well as a carjacking March 19, a hit-and-run on Feb. 23 and a domestic assault on Oct. 27.

He was arraigned via teleconference in Holyoke District Court Wednesday afternoon and held without the right to bail. A pretrial hearing was set for April 24.

The tangle of cases was investigated by the Springfield Police Department’s homicide unit of the Detective Bureau under Capt. Trent C. Duda, and Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s Murder Unit.

“Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni expresses his sympathies to Mr. Fonville’s family,” said spokesman James Leydon after releasing the victim’s name.

No information has been released about a potential motive for the fatal shooting, or whether or how the separate alleged crimes were connected.

Updated on October 25, 2019 at 3:28 pm

A Massachusetts man is accused of pulling a gun on two people who had arranged to meet with him in Simsbury to sell him an iPhone.

The victims called police to 55 Elm Street Friday and reported said that a man they were trying to sell an iPhone pulled a gun on them and took the device. The victims were not hurt and the suspect walked away.

Police found the suspect in a building within the complex and made contact through the North central Emergency Service Team, which includes crisis negotiators. The suspect surrendered without incident.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Fonville of Springfield Mass., was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree robbery, threatening, larceny, and breach of peace. He was held on a $100,000 bond.
