A volunteer NYPD clergyman was arrested for impersonating a police officer after he was pulled over for driving like a maniac in Connecticut, cops said Thursday.
Popeye Whittingham turned on emergency lights on his Nissan SUV and was driving recklessly on I-95 in Greenwich around 6:45 p.m., prompting numerous 911 calls, state police said.
Whittingham was jockeying through traffic, tailgating, and crossing into the center median before he was pulled over, officials said.
When Connecticut cops caught up with him 16 miles north in Westport, he flashed an NYPD badge and claimed to be a detective, according to police.
But cops soon realized he was actually a volunteer clergyman in Harlem’s 32nd Precinct and had no law-enforcement power.
The SUV, which had an expired New York registration, appeared to be Whittingham’s private vehicle, and the emergency lights did not appear to be NYPD-issued, Connecticut police said. He was also driving with a suspended license, officials said.
He was charged with Use of Unauthorized Colored or White Lights, Impersonation of a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, and Operating with a Suspended/Revoked License, cops said.
Whittingham posted a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Norwalk Superior Court on May 3, according to officials.
