Published 3 hours ago

Prosecutors say an arrest has been made in the fatal shootings of a couple at their Camden home earlier this year.

Gary Johnson faces two counts of murder in the deaths of 23-year-old John Valerio and 25-year-old Aleshia Hill.

Police found the couple inside their city home on April 4, and the pair were pronounced dead there a short time later. Officers had gone to the residence after receiving a 911 call.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.

Johnson was arrested late Thursday night in Pennsauken and remained in custody Sunday. He's due to be arraigned Tuesday.

It wasn't known Sunday if the 37-year-old Camden man has retained an attorney.

Prosecutors: Camden County Man Killed Couple, Tried To Sell Victim’s Ring
August 9, 2016 4:29 PM

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors say a man accused of killing a couple in their Camden home stole the woman’s engagement ring and tried to sell it.

Gary Johnson of Camden was arraigned Tuesday on murder charges in the deaths of 23-year-old John Valerio and 25-year-old Aleshia Hill. He wasn’t represented by an attorney.

Police found the couple inside their home on April 4, and they were pronounced dead there a short time later. Officers had gone to the residence after receiving a 911 call.

Prosecutors say the ring, cash and cellphones were missing when the victims’ bodies were found. Witnesses told investigators that the 37-year-old Johnson had been seen trying to sell a ring that looked like Hill’s.

Prosecutors say Johnson had gone to the residence to rob the couple.

Killer tried to sell engagement ring after shooting couple, cops say

on August 09, 2016 at 11:45 AM

CAMDEN — John Valerio proposed to Aleshia Hill on New Year's Eve. Four months later, the engagement ring used to consecrate that bond would be lifted from Hill's hand by her alleged killer.

Gary Johnson, the 37-year-old Camden man arrested late last week and charged in connection with the engaged couple's slaying, was hauled into court Tuesday to be arraigned on murder charges.

Behind him, a packed courtroom. Before him, Superior Court Judge Richard Wells. Beside him, Camden County Prosecutor's Office Assistant Prosecutor Peter Crawford, who laid out the case against the man.

Valerio and Hill lived together at the scene of the shooting in East Camden. Crawford said the couple were "known to keep amounts of cash there" and that Johnson and Valero worked together in Pennsauken — although family and friends declined to say after the hearing what their job was.
