Updated at 10:29 AM 3/29/19

Police have made an arrest in the city’s latest homicide taking a 38-year-old into custody Wednesday.

Derrick Dewayne Lewis is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a felon, according to jail records.

Lt. Craig Waldrup of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a verbal argument Monday evening with 25-year-old Christopher Michael Blessett led to the shooting on Mohawk Street. Both men lived nearby, Lewis on Plymouth Street and Blessett on Labelle Street at Eureka Garden. Blessett was found lying on the street suffering from gunshot wounds and died at the hospital. Waldrup would not elaborate on whether the men knew each other or what the altercation may have been about.
