Aylin Canon appears in court.

A woman has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old girl over several months while working as a group mentor for an after-school program on the Lower East Side, officials said Thursday.

Aylin Canon, 29, who lives in the Inwood section of Manhattan, was charged Thursday with criminal sex act in the second degree and other raps, according to the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the Department of Education.

Canon was employed by the Education Alliance, a community-based organization that provided after-school programs at PS 188 – The Island School on East Houston Street.

SCI found that Canon engaged in a course of sexual conduct with the student over the course of several months at multiple locations, including at Canon’s home on Hillside Avenue, officials said.

Canon had sex with the victim between February and June of last year, according to law enforcement sources.

The victim and Canon would meet “frequently” during those months, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

The source added that the victim had told a friend about the alleged incidents — and that friend told her own mother, who alerted authorities.

“There is no place in the New York City school system for those who prey on children,” Special Commissioner Anatasia Coleman said in a statement.

Canon’s employment with the Educational Alliance was terminated in May of last year, according to the SCI.

DOE spokesman Doug Cohen said in a statement, “These are deeply disturbing allegations, and Ms. Canon was fired in May.”

He added, “She was never a DOE employee and will not work in a New York City public school again.”

An Educational Alliance spokesperson said in a statement, “The safety and well-being of the children in our care is our top priority. That’s why when a parent reached out to us and shared concerns about someone working in our after-school program, we took swift and immediate action.

“The parent shared with us that one of the after-school employees was texting and interacting with her child on social media, which is against our organization’s policy, and we immediately suspended the individual and launched an investigation,” the spokesperson said.

“At the time of our investigation and as part of the original complaint, there was no allegation about sexual activity related to this individual. If that had been the case, we would have immediately reported it to the authorities. We are sickened to learn of the allegation that the relationship may have been sexual in nature. We will continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety and security of each and every child in our programs,” the spokesperson said.

All employees who work with children for the Educational Alliance are required to pass a full background check before being hired, and Canon passed hers, according to the organization.
Those who find the truth hateful just hate hearing the truth.
