ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WPDE) Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Sale with Rowland Police Department had to be airlifted to UNC Medical Center just after 1 a.m. Saturday morning after he was beaten while trying to arrest a man on Benton Court, according to Rowland Police Chief Hubert B. Graham.

Graham said the officer responded to a disturbance call in the area.:bongo:

He added they've charged Jamel Alphonso Rogers with assault with a deadly weapon with intentions to kill while inflicting serious injuries, kidnapping and two counts of resisting a public officer.

A bystander recorded the officer's struggle with the man on a cell phone and went live on Facebook. It's gained dozens of shares.

The video shows the fight lasted for nearly 11 minutes. During the incident, Sale asked a man to help, but the man refused to offer him any assistance.

Several people come outside and some urge others to help.

The video shows one man pulls the man away from the officer but lets him go.

The man then goes back to attack the officer and repeatedly punches him in the face.

Chief Graham said Officer Sale was the only officer on duty Friday night and because of that it took backup some time to get there.

Graham said Dillon County deputies got on the scene before their counterparts in Robeson County.

The video shows Sale's face pretty bloody before EMS arrived.

Officer Sale may have a broken bone around his eye and that's why he was airlifted to the hospital, according to Graham.

Sale's gun and some equipment got lost in the fight, Graham said, but has been recovered.

Graham said seeing the video really upsets him, but it shows the harsh reality of what police can encounter during calls.

"Today's society, that's just how they think and operate. This is something that we, as law enforcement, been telling the public for years. It's not shocking to us because we been doing this for years," said Graham.

He added a video of the attack against the officer will be of great benefit to getting a conviction against the suspect.

"I'm thankful for the video because it pretty much proves my case for my officer," Graham said.

This is the second time Sale has been attacked on a call.

He was surrounded by a crowd outside a store last December when he worked for the Maxton Police Department.

Sale was violently beaten by one man in the crowd.

That fight was recorded on a cell phone and shared on social media.

Graham said Sale has had a hard way to go in the past year for just trying to do his job.
