City taxi commission advises drivers on gender-neutral pronouns

New York City’s taxi drivers are getting schooled on personal pronouns.

City taxi regulators are requesting that licensed hacks ask passengers whether they identify as he, she, they — or ze, according to an “inclusive language tips” email blasted out to drivers Wednesday morning.

“Using someone’s preferred pronoun is a simple way to show respect,” read the email, which was signed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission’s Office of Inclusion.

“Ask the passenger what their prounoun is. Do not assume someone’s pronoun because of their appearance or name on the app,” it continued.

“If you do not want to ask, you can ask how they preferred to be called or use [a] gender-neutral such as they or ze.”

The guidance is not a regulation — and drivers will not be penalized for failing to use preferred pronouns, TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg said.

“Communicating with our drivers about ways they can make passengers feel more welcome and comfortable through customer service is something we take seriously, as is being respectful to all New Yorkers,” he said.

City officials have been training municipal employees on gender-neutral pronouns since at least 2016.

Dictionary-maker Merriam-Webster recently declared “they” — the more popular gender neutral pronoun — 2019’s word of the year.
