Family blames botched plastic surgery for Harlem mother's death

Tuesday, August 01, 2017 05:30AM
HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) --
Botched plastic surgery apparently resulted in the death of a 31-year-old woman.

She received the injections to her buttocks not overseas, but right in Manhattan.

Latesha Bynum would have turned 32 on Sunday. Instead of a birthday party, her family is mourning her death.

"She was loving, she was loving, anybody that was going through something, the families, she was there for them," her brother said.

The mother of two young children went to have a cosmetic procedure on July 15th. Except she didn't go to a plastic surgeon's office. Instead, police report she went to a residential apartment building at 319 East 21st Street in Gramercy Park.

There, authorities say she was given an injection in her buttocks at 9 p.m. Two hours later, back at her apartment in Harlem, she starting suffering chest pains and called 911.

"They killed my sister," the victim's brother said.

Latesha went on life support that night. Two weeks later, on Thursday, her family made the brutal decision to pull the plug. Latesha leaves behind two daughters, ages 13 and 8.

A Harlem woman was so obsessed with having the perfect Kim Kardashian-style booty that she got a black-market butt injection in a Manhattan apartment — and wound up dying from the botched procedure, police sources said on Monday.

Latesha Bynum, 31, was pumped with the toxic tush material in an unmarked building on East 21st Street near First Avenue in Gramercy Park on July 15, according to the sources and state health officials.

Twelve days later, the mother of two — who is shown flaunting her curves in a series of Facebook photos — was struck by an intense chest pain and dizziness, the sources said.

She called 911 at around 11 p.m. on Thursday and was rushed by ambulance to Mount Sinai St Luke’s hospital, where she was pronounced brain-dead and later taken off life support, according to the sources.

Cops spent much of last weekend investigating an apartment on the third story of the brick apartment complex, neighbor Michael Desouza said.

He was stunned that the upscale building had been used as a hub for back-alley plastic surgery.

“I know a few people in this building, and I can’t think of anyone that would do such a thing. Nice people in here,” Desouza said.

The Gramercy Park building is not a legitimate medical office, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health.

“DOH has no record of a DOH-licensed facility at that location,” she said.

In recent years, women and transgender people have died after illegal “pumping parties” — in which they pay to have industrial-grade silicone injected into their breasts and rear ends to get curves at cut-rate costs.

In June 2015, Kelly Mayhew, 34, died in a Queens basement after a phony surgeon injected silicone into her backside and then bolted, police said at the time. The Maryland woman began gurgling and gasping for breath before EMTs arrived.

On Saturday, friends of Bynum posted a tribute video online, mourning her death and calling her a “sis to everyone who love[d] her.”

The video notes her nickname was TeTe and features images of her posing with pals around the Big Apple.

Her Facebook page says she is married, formerly lived in The Bronx and would have had a birthday just two days after her death.

Police are investigating her death but declined on Monday to say whether anyone had been arrested. The procedure had been performed solely for “cosmetic purposes,” a police source said.

A woman in Apartment 3C, where a door had appeared to have been kicked in, declined to comment, saying, “I can’t talk about it.”

The apartment complex has no signs for medical offices, and residents said no businesses are located inside.

The Queens woman accused of setting up a botched butt injection that killed a mother of two appeared in Manhattan court Friday as her victim’s mother sobbed in the gallery.

Allison Spence, 44, was arraigned on charges of second-degree manslaughter and unauthorized practice of a profession for allegedly arranging Latesha Bynum’s procedure with an unlicensed doctor at a Gramercy Park clinic, according to prosecutors.

Spence and the fake physician, who is still at large, allegedly had operated the cash-only clinic since 2013.

“No one with any medical training would ever have done this,” said Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Harrison Schweiloch, successfully arguing for a steep $1 million bail.

Defense lawyer Sekeena Gavagan argued that Spence had no criminal rec*ord and didn’t perform the actual procedure.

“They killed my baby,” the victim’s mother, Bertie Bynum, wailed as she left the courtroom with Lat*esha’s 8-year-old daughter.

The crushed parent sobbed in the hallway of Manhattan Criminal Court and embraced the grieving 8-year-old. “I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!” she told the little girl.

Surrounded by family and friends, Bertie said Latesha, 31, had been to the bogus clinic for silicone injections to her bottom at least twice.

After the fatal July 15 procedure, Latesha told Bertie the “doctor,” listed in her phone as Ally Buttx :p, and Spence placed her in a cold shower twice because her feet were turning blue, according to the mom.

Later that evening, Latesha called 911 and said she had chest pains and difficulty breathing, the complaint states. She was rushed to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced brain-dead and taken off life support, authorities said.

The city medical examiner ruled Latesha’s death a homicide caused by “systemic embolization of silicone injection(s) for cosmetic augmentation of buttocks.”

In recent years, the obsession with a Kardashian-style booty at cut-rate costs has led to numerous deaths and injuries.

Woman indicted for lethal botched butt injection
By Rebecca Rosenberg
October 4, 2017 | 7:32pm

The phony nurse who scheduled the black-market butt injection that killed a Harlem woman was indicted, prosecutors said Wednesday in Manhattan court.

The exact charges against Allison Spence, 44, were not revealed, but she was arrested on manslaughter and unauthorized practice of a profession raps.

Spence allegedly set up victim Latesha Bynum’s July 15 procedure with an unlicensed doctor at a Gramercy Park clinic, according to prosecutors.

After Bynum had the illegal silicone injections, she developed chest pain and difficulty breathing. The Harlem woman was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced brain dead.

Authorities said that the fake physician who allegedly performed the deadly augmentation is still at large. He and Spence ran the lucrative cash-only clinic since 2013, prosecutors allege.

A Queens woman who helped a fake doctor perform a black-market butt injection that killed a Harlem woman was hit with new charges Thursday for illegal cosmetic procedures on other victims.

Allison Spence, 44, was arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court on one count of manslaughter for the death of Latesha Bynum last July and eight counts of unauthorized practice of a profession.

Prosecutors did not reveal the exact number of the other victims.

“Not guilty,” were the only words she spoke at the brief proceeding.

The dead victim’s mother, Bertie Bynum, lashed out at Spence as she left the courtroom.

“That b—h murdered my baby!” she wailed. “She’s a murderer!”

The name of Spence’s co-defendant, Kevin Richardson, who is still at large, was revealed for the first time in the unsealed indictment.

Bynum, a mother of two, had the illegal bum-enhancing procedure at the Gramercy Park clinic July 15.

That night, she complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced brain dead. An autopsy found that silicone had entered her veins and killed her.

Spence and Richardson allegedly operated the lucrative cash-only cosmetic clinic since 2013, according to prosecutors.

Spence is being held on $1 million bond.

A phony physician was arrested Tuesday for performing a botched butt job that killed a Harlem woman, cops said.

Kevin Richardson, 47, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. and charged with manslaughter for performing an unlicensed medical procedure on Latesha Bynum, 31, on July 15, according to police.

“No one with medical training would have done this because it’s dangerous,” prosecutor Michele Bayer said in Manhattan Criminal Court Wednesday. “The victim in this case died soon after. All of these additional victims are in serious danger. The effects of the silicone entering the bloodstream could kill any of these victims and it’s not necessarily immediate.”

Bynum, a 31-year-old mother of two, got the injections at the cash-only Gramercy Park clinic on July 15 and died 12 days later, officials said.

Her ont, Delores Bynum, 54, said the fambly was happy Richardson is in custody but angry about the five to 15 year sentence they were told he was facing.

“It should be a life for a life,” she told The Post. “They took her life and should pay for it, that’s how we all feel.”

“Justice is not being served,” she added.

Richardson had the help of assistant Allison Spence, 44, who was previously arrested for manslaughter and other related charges while Richardson was on the lam.

The pair had been running the clinic since 2013, according to prosecutors. Bayer said that Richardson—who has a criminal record including robbery and witness tampering–changed his appearance to avoid getting caught while he was on the run in Texas, Louisiana and New Jersey.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, unauthorized practice of a profession, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Richardson was held without bail and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on the top charge. He and Spence are due back in court on Feb. 1.

Fake doctor pleads guilty to overseeing fatal butt injection

A fake doctor pleaded guilty Thursday to overseeing a toxic butt injection that left a Harlem mom dead.

Kevin Richardson copped to charges of second-degree manslaughter and three counts of unauthorized practice of a profession for the botched butt job that killed Latesha Bynum.

In exchange for the plea, Manhattan court judge Abraham Clott promised to sentence Richardson, who ran the black market clinic for years, to 4 to 12 years behind bars.

Richardson told the court he wasn’t in the Gramercy Park apartment on July 15, 2017, when his co-defendant Allison Spence allegedly pumped the mother-of-two with the poisonous silicone.

Spence’s case is still pending.

As Richardson admitted to his role in the fatal procedure, members of Bynum’s family gutturally sobbed in the gallery.

Her two daughters, ages 9 and 14, were there as well. They now live with their grandmother, Bertie Bynum, in the Poconos.

“My daughter won’t be back in 4 to 12 years,” Bertie raged in the courthouse halls following the proceeding. “This is crazy! [He] killed my daughter!”

The phony physician is scheduled for sentencing May 24.

A fake doctor who oversaw a black-market butt injection that cost a Harlem mother her life was sentenced Thursday to four to 12 years — after the victim’s daughter blasted him in court.

“He took more than just my mother, he took my best friend — he took my everything,” the 15-year-old said of defendant Kevin Richardson before breaking into sobs.

The young girl recalled the day her mother, Latesha Bynum, 31, returned home from the Gramercy clinic after the deadly July 15, 2017, procedure.

Her mom was struggling to breathe, and she and her younger sister went with her to the hospital.

Bynum asked a staffer there if she was going to die, and he told her he didn’t know.

“That’s when she started crying, and I was just wanting to hug her and tell her, ‘Mommy, I love you, you’re going to be OK,’” the girl said in Manhattan Supreme Court. Her mother was pronounced brain dead 10 days later and taken off life support.

Richardson copped to second-degree manslaughter and three counts of unauthorized practice of a profession last May as part of a plea deal for killing Bynum and injuring additional victims.

He and his co-defendant, Allison Spence, allegedly did Bynum’s butt injections at their black-market clinic, where they were raking in thousands of dollars performing illegal cosmetic procedures, according to prosecutors.

The case against Spence is still pending.

Woman pleads guilty to setting up black market butt injection
By Rebecca Rosenberg
March 7, 2019 | 7:02pm

A Queens woman pleaded guilty Thursday to setting up a black market butt injection that killed mother-of-two Latesha Bynum.

Allison Spence, 46, copped to second-degree manslaughter and unauthorized practice of a profession in exchange for up to eight years in prison for the deadly July 15, 2017, procedure.

Spence was working for fake doctor Kevin Richardson at an unlicensed Gramercy clinic where Bynum had the illegal injection.

When Bynum left, she developed intense chest pain and called 911. She was later pronounced brain-dead at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s hospital and taken off life support. An autopsy found that silicone had entered her bloodstream and killed her.

Richardson was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison last September after also pleading guilty to manslaughter and other charges as part of a plea deal.

Spence is due back in court March 28 for sentencing.

Mom lashes out in court at woman who killed daughter with botched butt injection
By Rebecca Rosenberg
March 28, 2019 | 8:00pm | Updated March 28, 2019 | 9:31pm

The shattered mother of a Harlem woman who died from a black-market butt injection blasted the fake nurse who performed the deadly procedure as “not even human” in Manhattan court.

“You knew you wasn’t no nurse. You knew you didn’t go to no medical school. What right did you have to shoot anything into my child?” Bertie Bynum asked defendant Allison Spence just before she was sentenced to up to eight years in prison.

On July 15, 2017, Spence and her co-defendant, fake doctor Kevin Richardson, injected mother-of-two Latesha Bynum with silicone, which entered her blood stream, blocked her arteries and killed her.

“You’re not even human,” seethed Bertie, who was wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with an image of her daughter in a coffin.

“You see my shirt?” she yelled at Spence. “What I have to deal with. This is the way I have to see my baby, in a casket!”

During the verbal barrage, Spence, 46, looked down at the defense table with a pained expression.

Spence previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and unauthorized practice of a profession in exchange for two to eight years behind bars.

Assistant DA Harrison Schweiloch read a statement from an unidentified second victim who was permanently disfigured from the same butt-plumping procedure.

“All the complications I’ve had from this, I think I’d rather be dead than watch my buttocks rot from the inside out,” the letter reads. “It’s not even the same color as my body anymore.”

Prosecutors say that Spence and Richardson performed countless cosmetic procedures at a now-shuttered Gramercy Park clinic, where they raked in thousands of dollars.

Richardson was sentenced to four to 12 years last September after pleading guilty to manslaughter and other charges.
