The man suspected of fatally running over a gas station attendant Nassau County Police Department

A gasoline thief mowed down and killed a station attendant on Long Island with his SUV Monday after trying to steal $22 worth of gas, police and a store employee said.

The suspect got into a fight with the attendant, 59-year-old Cemal Dagdeviren, at about 7:20 a.m. at the Pit Stop Gas Station on Grand Avenue in Hempstead after trying to steal the gas, store worker Umut Polat said.

Dagdeviren stood in front of the thief’s car, a dark-colored SUV, to prevent him from driving off as the confrontation escalated, video released by police shows.

The suspect, who has shoulder-length dreadlocks and was seen wearing a bright-orange hat , then hit the gas and mowed down Dagdeviren, the video shows.

As the suspect escaped, Dagdeviren was rushed to South Nassau Communities Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said.

“He worked here for over 22 years,” Polat said of the slain man. “He was very helpful, kind. A very good person and honest person.”

Polat added that other customers have stolen gas from the shop, but this was the first time Dagdeviren tried to stop someone from driving off.

“We’re offering a $5,000 reward for information,” he said. “Help us to catch him please.”

The suspect was last seen driving off southbound on Grand Avenue, cops said.
