A troubled Cornell University fraternity will shutter “indefinitely”in the wake of a racially motivated assault of a black student on the Ivy League campus.

The Chi Chapter of Psi Upsilon said it will close following the arrest of student John Greenwood, 19, busted Friday morning on misdemeanor assault charges.

Greenwood, who is white , was arrested after a fight broke outside the home of a member of Kappa Sigma just after 1:30 a.m. A black male student was allegedly punched in the face by four or five white men and called the n-word while trying to break up the brawl, which was happening in front of his home.

“I was pretty bloodied up,” the victim, a junior in Kappa Sigma, told the Cornell Daily Sun, the school’s newspaper.

At least four student groups at Cornell claimed members of Psi Upsilon were behind the attack – which the fraternity denied.

Psi Upsilon’s alumni group said Greenwood “is not and has never been” a member of its chapter.

Last year, the fraternity was stripped of its recognition for three years in wake of two violations, including for violating a suspension order by hosting a party, the Daily Sun reported.

The frat had been on interim suspension following sexual assault allegations against its president Wolfgang Ballinger, who pleaded not guilty to attempted rape, criminal sex act and sex abuse charges.

Cornell President Martha Pollack said the school would not consider Psi Upsilon’s reinstatement pending a final investigation.

“The events of the last few weeks are thus deeply painful; and, of course, the pain is magnified a thousandfold for those whose dignity and, indeed, very bodies have been attacked. I will not tell you ‘this is not who we are,’ as the events of the past few weeks belie that. But it is absolutely not who we want to be,” she said in a statement Saturday. “The leadership team and I have been working throughout the weekend, and we will continue to do so, to develop and implement steps to be a more equitable, inclusive and welcoming university.”

Greenwood will be arraigned in Ithaca City Court Sept. 27. Additional charges are pending.

Earlier this month, a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity was heard shouting “Let’s build a wall” around the Latino Living Center on campus, just after President Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

ITHACA, N.Y. — A white Cornell University student has admitted using a racial slur during an attack on a black student and has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Police initially charged 20-year-old John Greenwood, of Toronto, with assault as a hate crime after a black student said he was attacked by several people who hurled racial epithets outside his residence near the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York, in September.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Tuesday that Greenwood admitted using racial slurs but that it doesn’t appear the brawl was racially motivated. He notes “alcohol was a significant factor.” He says the victim and his family agreed with the reduced charge.

Greenwood has apologized and said he used “unacceptable” language.

The court ordered Greenwood to perform 75 hours of community service and pay restitution.
