Authorities have charged a New Jersey man with fatally shooting a woman in the chest while they were gathered for a birthday party at his home.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said Sunday that police responded to calls around 11 p.m. on Saturday in Riverside and found that 35-year-old Nikita Cross, of Galloway Township, was shot in the chest.

Officials have charged 42-year-old Darren Winningham, who lives at the residence where the shooting happened, with murder. He was lodged in the Burlington County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Law enforcement officials say several people were gathered at Winningham's house for a birthday party, but further details were not available.

Cross was taken to Lourdes Medical Center in Willingboro where she was pronounced dead.

A New Jersey university will posthumously award a bachelor's degree to a student who was shot and killed at a birthday party over the weekend.

The Press of Atlantic City reports Stockton University will award 35-year-old Nikita Cross a bachelor's degree in social work at its commencement ceremony on May 15.

Mary Beth Sherrier, assistant dean of Stockton's School of Social and Behavioral Science, says the Galloway Township woman was passionate about helping others.

Cross' brother, Darnell Ganges, says she would have been the first person in her family to graduate from college.

Authorities say 42-year-old Darren Winningham fired his gun during a party in his Riverside home on Saturday, killing Cross. He appeared in court on Monday on murder and weapons charges.

Darren Winningham pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the shooting death of Nikita Cross.

A man has admitted to shooting and killing a woman while they were gathered for a birthday party at his New Jersey home.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said Monday that Darren Winningham pleaded guilty last week to first-degree aggravated manslaughter in the shooting death of Nikita Cross in April 2016.

Winningham, 44, will be sentenced to 10 years in prison at sentencing next month.

Law enforcement officials said several people were gathered at Winningham's house for a birthday party on April 23, 2016 when the shooting occurred. Cross, 35, died a short time later at the hospital.

Stockton University awarded the Galloway Township woman a posthumous bachelor's degree in social work. She would have been the first member of her family to graduate from college, her brother said.

Winningham has remained behind bars since the killing.
