Man who hit Orlando police officer with car gets 18 years in prison

When former Orlando Police Officer William Anderson crosses a street with his 4-year-old daughter, Abby, she puts her hand up to cars and asks them not to hit her daddy, he said Thursday.

Since 17-year-old Edward Earl Kelty III hit him with a car during a traffic stop July 13, 2015, his life has been consumed by hospital visits and pain, Anderson said.

Kelty, now 20, was sentenced to 18 years in prison followed by 12 years of probation Thursday. He had pleaded no contest to battery on a law-enforcement officer resulting in great bodily harm.

“I am not the same person I was on July 12, 2015, when I was playing with my daughter and nephew in the driveway of my home,” Anderson said.

Kelty read a letter apologizing to Anderson, and both his parents testified that their son had never been in trouble before.

“I am apologizing because I really mean it, not just apologizing to get out of trouble,” Kelty said. “… I can’t change what happened that night, but I do want to change my future.”

Officer Anderson had been undergoing treatment at the University of Florida Shands Hospital inpatient rehabilitative center in Gainesville and will continue to receive speech and physical therapy through Shands
