BOND HILL, Ohio -- A Bond Hill man charged with rape, kidnapping and felonious assault was released Thursday on bond, according to the Hamilton County clerk of courts.

Court documents said that Shannon Merritt, 46, was arrested March 3 after threatening and injuring his victim during a sexual assault.

"This is an atrocity," said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters. "How anyone could do this to another human being is mind-boggling … and it borders on barbaric."

Documents: Man raped his mother, broke her neck

A 46-year-old Cincinnati man is standing trial, accused of raping his 63-year-old mother earlier this year.

A jury was selected Monday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court. Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday morning.

The alleged incident happened in early March. According to court documents, the man initially argued with his mother over money.

He “dragged her around the home, punching her in the face and body,” court documents say.

The man also “forcibly raped her,” the documents say.

The Enquirer does not name victims of sexual assault, and is not naming the man to avoid identifying his mother.

She suffered fractured vertebrae in her neck, bruises, cuts and bite marks to her inner thighs and back, court documents say.

In court Monday before jury selection began, Assistant Prosecutor Anne Flanagan told Judge Charles Kubicki that the woman ran naked to a neighbor’s house for help.

The man grabbed his mother, pulled her toward her home, Flanagan said, and “throws her back over the fence.”

According to court documents, when the man finally fell asleep, his mother called 911. He was still asleep in the home when police arrived.

The man “claimed not to remember what had happened and said he had no knowledge as to how she was injured,” the documents say.

He faces charges including rape, felonious assault and kidnapping.

On March 8, records show he posted a $50,000 bond and was released from jail. He then went back to his mother’s house and “tried to gain entry,” prosecutors said in a motion to increase bond.

Relatives caring for the woman didn’t let him inside.

Records show a judge on March 10 set bond at $500,000. The man has been held at the Hamilton County Justice Center since then.

Man who admitted raping his mother: 'I blacked out':p
Published 1:53 p.m. ET Oct. 24, 2017

A Cincinnati man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to raping his 63-year-old mother and will serve 11 years in prison.

As the judge read the terms of the plea, the man, 46, shocked both sides when he said he was not guilty of the charges, :rolleyes:despite signing the agreement minutes beforehand.

"This is a bad situation. I feel bad about the whole incident. But I don't even know what happened. I blacked out, somebody slipped me something in my drink. I don't even know what was going on. I just don't know," he said to the judge.

Assistant Prosecutor Anne Flanagan said during the assault, the victim suffered a broken neck. The mother's DNA also was recovered from the defendant's genitals after the rape, Flanagan said.
