One of the three victims in a triple murder in Old Jefferson is believed to have been intentionally set on fire, said Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand in a press conference.

Sydney Hanson, a former girlfriend of the man in custody, Jatory Evans, was found on the second floor of the home with accelerants stacked on her body.

"We believe she was intentionally set on fire in her bedroom," Normand said.

Sydney Hanson was seven months pregnant, and her mother and father were both fatally shot. Evans is accused of stabbing Sydney Hanson before setting her on fire. He is also accused of stabbing and shooting Sydney Hanson's mother, Samantha; and he is accused of shooting her father, Dwayne Hanson.

Deputies executed search warrants at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home of Evans, who was booked on three counts of first degree murder and feticide.

The warrant accuses Evans, 28, of being "controlling and abusive" toward Sydney Hanson in the months leading up to the deaths of her and her parents, Dwayne Hanson, 46, and Samantha Hanson, 45. Late last month, Dwayne Hanson's car was destroyed, and he suspected Evans was responsible, the warrant said.

Sydney Hanson obtained a restraining order against Evans in the aftermath of that incident, the warrant said. A court hearing over whether to leave the restraining order in place was scheduled for Nov. 15.

Meanwhile, Sydney Hanson's father had also gotten a gun from a friend for the protection of his family before they were found dead as firefighters worked to put a fire out at the family's home on River Road on Monday afternoon.

A Facebook account belonging to a Laitram employee named Dwayne Hanson from Jefferson says he studied at Illinois State University and Prosser Career Academy.

The Chicago native's page is packed with the Cubs baseball team's scores. He posted photos taken from center field of Wrigley Field's during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the middle of September, less than two months before the Cubs won their first World Series championship since 1908.

The suspect, Jatory Evans, 28, stabbed and set fire to his pregnant girlfriend, Sydney Hanson, in her upstairs bedroom and fatally shot her parents, the authorities said. Hanson's mother, Samantha Hanson, was said to have been stabbed about two dozen times and shot five times. Her father, Dwayne Hanson, was shot twice. Sydney Hanson, 20, obtained a restraining order last month requiring Evans to stay at least 300 feet away from her. That document was found underneath Sydney Hanson's body at the crime scene. "We believe that she was intentionally set on fire in her bedroom," the sheriff said. "There were a number of books and other accelerant materials stacked on top of her body." Evans had been dating Sydney Hanson, and he was the father of the of the unborn child, officials said. A search warrant obtained by the authorities said Evans had become "extremely controlling and abusive in the relationship," and it referred to a recent run-in Evans had with Hanson's father at the River Road residence. Sydney Hanson had been scheduled to attend a baby shower at 11 a.m. Monday. - (Black-on-white (http://www.newnation.org/NNN-Black-on-White.html))

A second man has been arrested in connection with the shocking triple murder at an Old Jefferson home last week. Jared Parker, 27, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Friday as an accessory to the crime.

Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said that Parker lied to detectives in an attempt to support the alibi of Jatory Evans, his nephew and the man deputies have arrested in connection with the killings.

"Parker provided false information in hopes of supporting Evans' alibi," Fortunato said. "He also assisted him in getting a vehicle."

A man charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend as well as her parents and torching their home in Old Jefferson last year killed himself at the Jefferson Parish jail on Wednesday, according to officials.

Jatory Evans, 29, apparently hanged himself in his cell at the jail in Gretna, Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich said.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Glen Boyd said Evans was taken to a hospital after being found about 4:25 p.m. and was pronounced dead a little more than an hour later.
