City Council Speaker Melissa "Crazy Eyes" Mark-Viverito was arrested as part of a protest at Trump Tower Tuesday in defense of undocumented immigrants whose families brought them to the United States as young children.

Mark-Viverito was taken into custody after sitting down in the middle of 5th Avenue and 57th Street shortly after noon — an act of civil disobedience against President Trump’s recent move to expunge protections put in place by his predecessor on behalf of so-called Dreamers.

Trump gave Congress six months to come up with a solution to replace Obama’s scrapped policy — known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)– which had delayed the deportation of Dreamers and allowed them to obtain work permits starting in 2012.

“[We’re here] to send a strong message to Trump and to the Republican Congress that we expect to protect DACA recipients,” Mark-Viverito told reporters shortly before her arrest. “We expect to protect them and their family members.”

A video posted online shows Mark-Viverito in plastic handcuffs being led onto a Department of Corrections bus.

A spokeswoman for Mark-Viverito said she was taken to Police Department headquarters in downtown Manhattan for processing.

Three members of Congress, including Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-Manhattan), were among a group of elected officials and advocates also taken into custody at the protest.
