Disgraced former state Sen. Hiram Monserrate accepted donations from a former City Council candidate who once urged Latinos to donate their blood because the blood of blacks and whites “has problems.”

José Eduardo Giraldo, who donated $200 to Monserrate’s council campaign this year, made the controversial remarks on a Spanish-language TV show in 2009.

“What’s the best blood for us Latinos? Our own blood,” Giraldo said at the time.

“The blood of blacks has problems. The blood of Europeans has problems, and the best blood for us Latinos is Latino blood because it has the antigens that make us different.”

Giraldo, who lost to Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland in his 2009 Democratic primary run, apologized for the remarks, saying, “I’m not a racist.”

Monserrate refused Monday to give back the money. He said Giraldo apologized for it and has “moved on.”
