HOMER The victim killed Thursday by an inmate who escaped from the David Wade Correctional Center was 19-year-old Amanda Carney, authorities said Friday.

Both State Police Col. Kevin Reeves and the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office identified the victim.

Both also said Carney was the stepdaughter of an assistant warden at the state prison. Neither identified the assistant warden.

Authorities have said the slaying occurred after an inmate, Deltra Henderson, escaped from the David Wade Correctional Center in Claiborne Parish. Henderson died later in a shootout with law-enforcement authorities.

Carney has been variously described as the stepdaughter of an assistant warden and as the daughter of a woman who lives with the assistant warden. The relationships were not immediately clear.

The prison is situated on Bell Hill Road just off Louisiana 520.

An escaped inmate who is accused of killing a 19-year-old girl before law enforcement officials killed him in a standoff was in prison after pleading guilty to a 1999 armed robbery in Farmerville.

Henderson, 39, was found to be missing from the state prison in north-central Louisiana's Claiborne Parish on Thursday afternoon.

Around 1:40 p.m. a manhunt started, according to information from the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Officers found a wrecked pickup along Louisiana 520 about a mile northeast of the prison. They determined that Henderson had stolen, then crashed it.

The deceased victim, Amanda Carney, whom authorities are saying was the step-daughter of an assistant warden at the prison, was found another quarter mile to the northeast, near a dirt road that connects to the highway.

Henderson is believed to have kidnapped and killed Carney. Later that afternoon, officers found Henderson in a home on the prison property. They surrounded the structure and returned fire after Henderson shot at them. He was killed during the incident.

Henderson, a trusty at David Wade Correctional Center, had been locked up at the facility since June 4, 2001, for three different convictions. His sentences began a month earlier at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel on May 4, 2001.
