A basketball coach at a Baltimore City school is charged with rape and other sex offenses involving a 13-year-old girl, city police said.

Carl Trusty, 26, is charged with second-degree rape, second-, third- and fourth-degree sex offenses, second-degree assault, second-degree child abuse, sex abuse of a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with the relationship with the girl, police said.

City police said at least one incident between Trusty and the girl took place inside the school, identified as Collington Square Elementary/Middle School in east Baltimore.

Police said it was described as a “consensual” relationship between Trusty and the girl. However, Baltimore police spokesman Chief T.J. Smith stressed that a 13-year-old cannot legally consent to a relationship with an adult.

"Let's understand, a consensual relationship is not something a 13-year-old girl can offer," Smith said.

Smith said while Trusty is a coach at the school, it is unclear on how he and the girl met.

Police said Trusty sexually assaulted the girl on April 4 inside an office at the school, but it is possible other incidents could have occurred as early as in late 2016.
