The man accused of beating a 95-year-old Anoka man to death and pawning some of his property is now charged with first-degree murder.

Isaiah Montrell Thomas, 27, previously was charged with second-degree murder in the November killing of Albert John Loehlein. An Anoka County grand jury now has indicted Thomas on first-degree charges, which were unsealed Tuesday, according to a statement from Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo.

“The first-degree murder indictment reflects the horrible loss of life suffered by Mr. Loehlein in this case,” Palumbo said in the statement.

Loehlein suffered multiple blows to the head, face and neck, according to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, and it appeared he had been dead for two days when a family member delivering groceries found him in his bedroom on Nov. 28.

Fingerprints in Loehlein’s blood-spattered bedroom and a clock recovered from a Maplewood pawnshop led investigators to Thomas.
