Norfolk woman stole a dying man's pants after her girlfriend stabbed him, prosecutor says

Simyua Askew admitted she stole a dying man’s pants after her girlfriend called him a pervert and stabbed him in the heart.

Askew, 22, of the 800 block of Smith St., pleaded guilty on Tuesday to grand larceny and accessory after the fact in connection with the May 25 stabbing death of 56-year-old Carl Stevenson Shands Jr. outside the Shop ‘N Go on East Virginia Beach Boulevard.

In exchange for her guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop a second-degree murder charge and reduce two other charges against her. She faces one to 21 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced in April.

About midnight on May 25, Askew and her girlfriend, 26-year-old Natia Sylvia Boddie “encountered” Shands near the apartment the two women shared in Young Terrace, prosecutor Ramin Fatehi said in court documents.

Boddie told homicide detectives that Shands, about a week before the stabbing, made sexual advances toward her 7-year-old daughter at the Shop ‘N Go. Boddie said she called him a pervert, then smacked him.

“She felt like she needed to protect her daughter,” Detective La'Toya Mitchell said in court documents.

Then, early on May 25, Shands was “mean muggin’ ” her, and she started shaking because he was too close to where her daughter was sleeping, Mitchell said at a September court hearing.
