Des Plaines police have identified a Chicago man as the suspect in Tuesday’s hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian and injured another on Wolf Road.

Police charged Henry Houston, a 66-year-old black male of the 11000 block of Front Avenue, Chicago, with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death, a Class 1 felony.

According to Cmdr. Christopher Mierzwa of the Des Plaines Police Investigations Department, “corroborated witness accounts, along with a collection of evidence” led police to Houston.

Police said in a press release that Houston “fled the scene rendering no aid or assistance to the victims that were struck.”

Roman Polniak, a 52-year-old white male of the 3000 block of Haussen Avenue, Chicago, and and Joaquin Areilano, a 56-year-old Latino male of the 5000 block of 29th Street, Cicero, were struck by a white panel van at approximately 6:05 a.m. at the intersection of Wolf Road and Jarvis Avenue. Both men were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge by the Des Plaines Fire Department, where Polniak was pronounced dead later that day.

Areilano was treated and held overnight for non-life threatening injuries.
