WILLIAMSPORT - A man who shot a Williamsport taxi driver and robbed him of $26 has been sentenced to 36 to 72 years in prison.

Lycoming County Judge Nancy L. Butts on Tuesday, when she sentenced Dante Jamile Washington, 27, compared the lengthy sentence to the life change the crime has had on the victim.

Eugene Phillips was critically wounded when shot in the arm about 6 a.m. March 15, 2014. The bullet went into his torso, causing damage to the liver, spleen, stomach and lungs.

Phillips, who testified the shooting left him devastated, said: "I would have given him anything he wanted including the cab. He didn't have to shoot me."

He was working two jobs at the time to make ends meet, he said. Part of Washington's sentence was restitution of $1,568 primarily to cover Phillips's lost wages. He no longer drives a taxi.
