La Jolla’s Doug David this month traveled to New Orleans, a favorite destination. He’s been to the French Quarter so many times in two decades that some musicians know him.

But Sunday night, David was in University Medical Center there, paralyzed from the neck down and fighting to recover lung function well enough to return home.

Ten days ago, the 64-year-old retiree was brutally assaulted yards from the Music Factory record store and concert venue in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood near the French Quarter. Nearby is the home of OffBeat Magazine.

David was finally moved out of the intensive-care unit Sunday, being watched by his 40-year-old niece, Alicia Foulds of Rancho Cucamonga.

New Orleans police have identified a suspect in the Frenchmen Street beating that left a California man paralyzed from the neck down.

Police said they are looking for 30-year-old Christopher Smith, who faces a charge of aggravated battery in the Oct. 15 incident that left Doug David, of La Jolla, in a hospital bed.

David, 64, told police he was crossing the intersection of Frenchmen and Decatur streets around 11 p.m. Oct. 15 when "he was almost struck" by a black vehicle, according to NOPD. David threw a beer can, hitting the roof of the vehicle, police said. A men exited the car and hit David in the face and head area, David told police.

A New Orleans man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery over a punch on Frenchmen Street in October 2015 that left a California man paralyzed.

Christopher Smith, 31, who was charged with second-degree battery over the fisticuffs in Faubourg Marigny, had claimed the punching victim, Doug David, threw a can at his car at Frenchmen and Decatur streets, and that he was acting in self-defense when he threw the crippling punch.

Flemings-Davillier sentenced Smith to a six-month suspended sentence and 100 hours of community service. She urged Smith, in the future, to "walk away."
