Family of man killed by Newport News police agrees to $6,700 settlement

Melissa Dargan reacts after hearing the officer who shot and killed her son, Kawanza J. Beaty in July 2015 will not be indicted on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016.

Clyde Dargan, father of K.J. Beaty who was killed by Newport New Police last summer reacts to Howard Gwynn's Decision in the K.J Beaty Shooting.

NORFOLK The city of Newport News will spend $6,700 to settle the federal lawsuit brought by the family of a 23-year-old man shot and killed by police during a foot chase 18 months ago, lawyers told a federal judge on Friday.

Though Kawanza Jamal Beaty's family had initially asked for $10 million :pin damages when they filed the case in late 2015, the case grew weaker over the past year, in part because the family and their lawyer couldn't find any witnesses to back up their contention that police killed Beaty wrongfully in the early morning incident on July 4, 2015.

In that report, Commonwealth's Attorney Howard Gwynn ruled the shooting justified, saying that Beaty had raised a shogun toward an officer and that another officer was therefore in his rights to kill Beaty.

That left the family to take the nominal amount being offered by the city to settle the case against Newport News Police Detective Randy J. Gibson. The two sides arrived at the dollar amount to pay for the funeral expenses borne by the family.
