NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Three people were killed and three were critically injured in a stabbing inside a Newark, New Jersey home on Saturday afternoon, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The attack happened in the 100 block of Hedden Terrace around 3:55 p.m.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said an 8-year-old girl, 11-year-old boy and 23-year-old woman were killed, and two 13-year-olds — one boy and one girl, believed to be twins — and a 29-year-old woman were critically wounded. The victims were members of the same family, CBS2’s Christine Sloan reported.

The mother of the 13-year-old boy and girl returned home from shopping to find her children being carted out on stretchers, Sloan reported.

“She just collapsed, and I went over there to console them. It was like after they started bringing the kids outside, she just lost it,” resident Mae Singleton said. “She just said he forced himself in the house, and then that’s when I guess he went off and started stabbing them, I don’t know.”

Murray said 26-year-old Jeremy Arrington is wanted for questioning, but he is not being named as a suspect.

Arrington also has an unrelated warrant for sexual assault and aggravated assault, Murray said. He is considered armed and dangerous.

An “armed and dangerous” man with an outstanding warrant for sexual assault was being sought late Saturday in the stabbing of four children and two women in a Newark home, authorities said.

An 8-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and a 23-year-old woman died in the carnage, while three other victims — a girl and a boy, both 13, and a 29-year-old woman — suffered “life-threatening” wounds in the 4 p.m. Hedden Terrace bloodbath.

Police released a photo of Jeremy Arrington, 26, and labeled him “armed and dangerous.” He was already wanted on warrants for sexual assault and aggravated assault, officials said.

Essex County’s Major Crimes Task Force and Newark police are investigating. It wasn’t clear if or how the suspect was related to the victims, whom police did not identify by name.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the killings “probably one of the most tragic and savage situations that I’ve seen in a very, very long time here.

“The incident this evening was a horrific and horrible scene.”

Baraka urged anyone with information to contact police.

“We cannot harbor this individual, we cannot hide this individual,” he said at a news conference outside the home.

“We have to get him immediately before he hurts someone else. As long as he’s on the street, nobody is safe.”

Shocked neighbors gathered outside home, which was cordoned off with yellow crime-scene tape.

One said she saw the mother of the 13-year-olds return home to see them being carted out on stretchers.

“She just collapsed, and I went over there to console them. It was like after they started bringing the kids outside, she just lost it,” resident Mae Singleton told WCBS/Channel 2.

“She just said he forced himself in the house, and then that’s when I guess he went off and started stabbing them, I don’t know,” she said.

Ayonna McKnight told NJ.com she knows the family and they are “nice,” “all good people.”

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to a conviction in the case.
