A woman found beaten to death outside the old Riley Elementary School in Gary has been identified as a Griffith resident, according to the Lake County Coroner’s office.
The woman was Jennifer Kocsis, 37, of the 700 block of N. Jay Street, according to the coroner’s office.
She died from the sustained trauma to the head, neck and chest, the office said, and the death appears to be a homicide.
Children who were playing by the school found her bloodied body Saturday morning around 11 a.m. by the southwest side of the school, at 1301 E. 43rd Ave.http://posttrib.suntimes.com/news/4659247-418/dead-woman-identified-as-griffith-resident.html
A person-of-interest has been identified in the death of a 37-year-old former music teacher and respite care worker, according to police in Gary, Ind.
Sutton recalls that Kocsis popped into Pepe’s about 1 a.m. Saturday by herself to squeeze in some karaoke before closing time. She sang a Kenny Rogers duet with Sutton before walking out an hour later with another customer.
“She said, 'I’m going. I’ll see you later. I’m going to give this guy a ride home because he lives on Elmer Street,' which is a couple of blocks away from her. She said it in a way she must have known this guy," Sutton recalled.
Police want to question the man seen leaving the bar with Kocsis. Sutton said the man was not a regular and that he'd made sexual passes at customers earlier that night.
"I was like her last line of defense and I feel like I let her down... If I simply would have asked her if she knew this guy we would have had a different outcome," he lamented.
Customers describe the man seen leaving with Kocsis as a black male who stood about 6 feet tall and weighed about 240 pounds. They say he had a full build with a light beard that was peppered with gray hair.

Sparkling Spirit Shine On
JENNIFER KOCSIS was a loving, carefree lady with childlike qualities and the gift of gab. She loved Karaoke, the beach, her cats, and people in general. She would do anything for anybody.

A site for her? Then it is just a matter of time before we get an email complaining about our reporting of her being murdered by a nigger, being foolish enough to engage in a conversation with one and offering him a ride home. They will completely ignore the crux of the matter-niggers are murdering, raping beasts. Statistics prove it and, unfortunately, this woman will be added to those statistics.

A part-time Gary, Ind., construction worker and father of three children has been charged with the murder of a Griffith woman whose bloodied, badly beaten and partially-clothed body was found behind an abandoned elementary school Saturday.
Robert Lewis III, 38, was seen at 2 a.m. Saturday at Pepe's Mexican restaurant on Ridge Road in Griffith leaving in a car with Jennifer Kocsis, 37, a respite care worker for the disabled and a former music teacher, police say.
Kocsis stopped at the restaurant about an hour earlier to get in one last karaoke song for the night before closing time. Before leaving Pepe's, she told the karaoke deejay she intended to give a ride home to Lewis, who told her he lived near her.
Customers say Lewis had just met Kocsis that night and was not a regular at Pepe's.
Gary police said surveillance video from Pepe's proved to be instrumental to their case, and that customers and employees identified Lewis in a photo line-up.
Authorities took Lewis into custody on Tuesday, but they say it came with some measure of difficulty.
Police said when they went to Lewis's home to try and question him about Kocsis, he led them on a high-speed chase that reached a speed of 100 mph through residential neighborhoods and side streets of Gary.
He gave up after several minutes, they said, and surrendered to authorities without anyone getting hurt. During a subsequent search of his home, police said they found blood in his bedroom. They suspect it to be Kocsis'.
The break in this case comes on the very day family and friends gather at Burdan Funeral Home in Cedar Lake, Ind., for the visitation and funeral service of a woman remembered as loving, carefree, and unfailingly trusting of others.
"It's a tough day," said Ron Sutton, Kocsis' friend of 15 years, who reacted with some measure of satisfaction after hearing that Lewis had been charged with the her murder.
Police say Sutton, who is the longtime karaoke deejay at Pepe's, may have been the last person to see Kocsis alive other than her killer.
"It does not bring Jennifer back. It doesn't change that night. But at least there's some comfort knowing this beast is gone and he's not going to do this to another girl again," he said.
Lewis is currently in custody at the Lake County Indiana Jail.

Man Gets Life In Prison For Killing Griffith Woman
November 26, 2013 6:17 AM
CROWN POINT, Ind. (STMW) – A Gary, Ind., man was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2011 murder and sexual assault of a Griffith, Ind., woman who gave a stranger a ride home from a restaurant.
Robert Lewis III, 41, showed no reaction as Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell pronounced the sentence and did not speak during the hearing.
Boswell found that the state had proven the aggravator outlined in law — that Lewis intentionally killed Jennifer Kocsis while committing or attempting to commit criminal deviate conduct. The judge specifically rejected a mitigating factor offered by defense attorney T. Edward Page — that Lewis was so intoxicated he couldn’t appreciate the criminality of his conduct on the night of the murder.

Robert Lewis III
November 26, 2013 ( CROWN POINT, Ind.) -- A northwestern Indiana man convicted in the slaying of a former schoolteacher has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in her killing.
A Lake County judge sentenced 40-year-old Robert Lewis II on Monday in the sexual assault and killing of 37-year-old Jennifer Kocsis. Jurors convicted the Gary man last month.
The former Griffith schoolteacher was slain in April 2011 after she agreed to give Lewis a ride from a Griffith bar-restaurant. Her battered, partially clad body was found on the property of a vacant school.
The Times of Munster reports Linda Carey told the judge that her daughter had many friends and was a mentor to her nieces and nephews.
Lewis' defense attorney said the killing wasn't intentional and blamed Lewis' level of intoxication.

Justices re-sentence Griffith teacher slayer to 88 years
INDIANAPOLIS — Robert Lewis III, of Gary, will serve 88 years in prison for the 2011 rape and murder of Jennifer Kocsis, a 37-year-old Griffith school teacher.
The Indiana Supreme Court on Tuesday ended a years-long legal dispute over whether Lewis, 43, was properly sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by exercising its appellate authority to instead sentence Lewis to a term-of-years. In its 5-0 decision, the high court found that Lake Superior Judge Diane Ross Boswell should have ordered a new penalty phase of Lewis’ trial after the jury was unable to determine, beyond a reasonable doubt, whether Lewis’ crimes warranted a life sentence.
Boswell instead claimed she had the authority to unilaterally sentence Lewis to life in prison, and did so.
She affirmed that sentence last year after the Supreme Court directed Lewis be re-sentenced due to a procedural error.
Instead of going home, Lewis instead directed Kocsis to a secluded area behind the closed Riley Elementary School in Gary where he punched, strangled and stomped on her before sodomizing and beating her to death.
