HAZLETON — Within one day of Zachary John Richards’ death, police have in custody a man they say stabbed him in the back with a kitchen knife.

Hazleton City Police charged Amir M. Edwards, 22, of North Pine Street in Hazleton, with an open count of criminal homicide following Richards’ death early Thursday morning.

Amir was arraigned Friday afternoon before District Judge Joseph D. Zola and sent to Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail. Richards, 27, was the brother of a Luzerne County assistant district attorney, Justin Richards.

Police captured Edwards Thursday evening following a day-long investigation, police Chief Frank DeAndrea said.

State police in Carbon County wanted Edwards on suspicion he, along with another man, robbed a small grocery store, Tresckow Superfood, Wednesday evening, and critically wounded the clerk, arrest papers say.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Hazleton police, officers were called to 615 Cleveland St. just before 6 a.m. Thursday where they found Richards unconscious and bleeding heavily with a knife sticking out of his back.

Emergency medical crews were summoned to the scene, but Richards, whose last known address was Freeland, died from his wounds on the scene, police say.

A 17-year-old boy who lives at the Cleveland Street home told police that Edwards, who is a friend of his sister’s, was at their home around 4:30 a.m. Thursday when he began to argue with his sister and push her.

Richards, who had been staying at their home, woke up from the noise and told Edwards to leave.

Edwards left the house but said he would return, the witness told police.

About one hour later, Edwards returned and the argument resumed, police say. At that time, Edwards took his weapon from a kitchen knife block and stabbed Richards one time, the witness told police.

Edwards admitted that he stabbed Richards in the back, but said it was because Richards had pointed a rifle at him, police said.

That is one damn ugly feral nigger gorilla! The white kid should have taken the nigger's threat far more seriously. Knowing niggers like we do, a nigger threat is never to be taken lightly. It goes without saying that the nigger should hang today!

A Hazleton man involved in a 2014 crime spree that involved the robbing a Tresckow convenience store and stabbing a local man to death during a home invasion pled guilty Monday to a third-degree murder charge in the death of Zachary Richards.

Amir Edwards, 24, of North Pine Street, Hazleton, pled guilty to the murder of 27-year-old Richards on Sept. 11, 2014. The victim was the only brother of Luzerne County Assistant District Attorney Justin Richards. Due to the nature of that relationship, the case was prosecuted by the state Office of Attorney General.

The sentencing hearing will be held Nov. 7.
