A 49-year-old man was arrested Thursday (Sept. 8) after New Orleans police say he punched and strangled his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of her apartment complex and then raped her inside the apartment, according to the man's arrest warrant.

Terry Fields was booked the day of the attack on charges of first-degree rape and domestic abuse battery involving strangulation. The incident happened around 1:35 a.m. Thursday at the Riverview Apartments in the 5500 block of Tullis Drive in Algiers, police said.

An affidavit sworn by New Orleans Police Department office Miquel Aubert said the couple was arguing in her apartment when the woman ran out to get away from Fields. He followed her to the parking lot, the warrant said, "grabbed her," and ripped her clothes off. While still in the parking lot, Fields punched the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground, the warrant said.

As she was on the ground, police said, Fields strangled her, during which time the woman believes she might have blacked out.

She told police she was unsure how she got back into her apartment after being strangled. Once inside, however, she said she was placed on the bed in the bedroom, and Fields had intercourse and oral sex with her without her consent. The warrant says the victim said she did not resist, "believing if she did, he would beat her again."
