Colin Kaepernick explains why he sat during national anthem
Updated: Aug. 27, 2016 at 01:25 p.m.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.

His latest refusal to stand for the anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49ers' preseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium on Friday night.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

OFFICIAL TEAM STATEMENT:

The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem. — Bob Lange, V.P. Early life and high school

Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Heidi Russo, a 19-year-old woman who was single and destitute at the time. His birth father, an African American, was out of the picture before he was born.[1][2][3] Russo placed her son for adoption with Rick and Teresa Kaepernick, a white couple who had two children—son Kyle and daughter Devon—and were looking for a boy after having lost two other sons to heart defects.[1][4] Kaepernick became the youngest of their three children. He lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, until age four, and attended grade school in Turlock, California.[5][6]

Current and former NFL players on Saturday ripped San Francisco 49ers ugly mulatto quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who said he refused to get to his feet during the National Anthem to protest the country’s treatment of “black people and people of color.”

Kaepernick plopped himself on the bench and would not join his teammates for the anthem that preceded a Friday preseason home game against the Green Bay Packers. He claimed he was protesting police-involved killings of unarmed civilians around the country.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color ,” Kaepernick, who is biracial, told NFL Media’s Steve Wyche after the game.

“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Giants lineman Justin Pugh called Kaepernick’s actions “disrespectful to all the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect this country.”

“I will be STANDING during the National Anthem tonight. Thank you to ALL (Gender, Race, Religion) that put your lives on the line for that flag,” Pugh tweeted Saturday.

Pugh added: “To clarify I’m not saying I know what it’s like to walk in someone’s shoes, I don’t. Just stating what the National Anthem means to me.”

Ex-Giants running back Tiki Barber said he understood the quarterback’s point — but didn’t agree with it.

“Kaep is using his platform & brand to make a compelling & polarizing point, which is his right, even if it’s met with ire!#idontagree”

And former Falcons wide receiver Brian Finneran also tackled the QB. “Do something productive not disrespectful! Or move out!”

Kaepernick, 28, a five-year-league veteran, said he did not tell his team about his decision and did not fear retribution by the NFL.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said “players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the National Anthem.”

And the 49ers issued a statement Saturday saying the team “recognizes the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.”

Colin Kaepernick Wears Socks With Cops As Pigs
September 1, 2016 2:38 PM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As if Colin Kaepernick didn’t upset enough people with his decision to sit during the National Anthem last week, now it appears he has been wearing socks that depict cops as pigs.

According to CBSSports, Kaepernick has been wearing the socks since at least August 10th.

Kaepernick’s refusal to standing during the National Anthem last Friday created a national controversy.

This is not something that I am going to run by anybody,” Kaepernick said last week. “I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. … If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”

The issue spark conversation among everyone from sports, to politics, to celebrities, to anyone and everyone in between. While many veterans and service members disagreed with Kaepernick’s comments and stance, plenty of veterans defended him as well starting a hashtag #VeteransForKaepernick

The San Francisco 49ers play their final preseason game on Thursday night in San Diego against the Chargers at 10:00 p.m. E.T.
