Cadence Harris, age 5

Those who know the young victim and the man who is accused of kidnapping her are in shock after hearing about the events of Friday night that resulted in the death of the 5-year-old girl.

Cadence Harris was killed sometime between when she was abducted by 30-year-old Marcus McGowan and when he pointed his gun at police during a tense standoff at 20th and Metropolitan in Leavenworth, sources tell KCTV5.

Cadence and McGowan knew each other, but authorities haven't discussed their relationship. Family members have said that McGowan was dating Cadence's mother and that they had lived together with McGowan's family in Atchison.

LEAVENWORTH, KS (KCTV) -

Tragedy follows Cadence Harris' mother

Tragedy has repeatedly touched the life of the mother of a 5-year-old girl shot to death in Leavenworth Friday night.

And some wonder if more could have been done to protect the children of Christina Harris from violence. She has been involved in multiple tumultuous relationships that have included abuse.

The visitation for Cadence Harris started at 9 a.m. at the Faith Evangelistic Center in Leavenworth with funeral services following. It was a congregation the girl's mother and grandfather attended.

"I've known the Harris family my entire life. They have a silent type of strength. I know talking to the family they do not have bitterness toward anyone for any reason whatsoever," said Pastor Keith Conard who grew up with Cadence's grandfather. (of course we must forgive the nigger, noamsaying?)

A large crowd was in attendance to pay their respects to the little girl. Family then made their way to a cemetery in Missouri.

The church's pastor said what the family needs now is spiritual support.

"During tragedy people do come together and I saw that a lot over the last few days with this family and their friends. Especially with services today, people really rallied around them. People really do come together," Conard said.

The Leavenworth County attorney charged Marcus McGowan with aggravated child endangerment, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Cadence died last Friday after McGowen allegedly abducted her from an Atchison home and became involved in a high-speed chase with authorities. McGowan allegedly turned his weapon on police after he crashed in a construction zone in Leavenworth and they fired multiple shots at him.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said gunfire from officers did not hit Cadence or the suspect's vehicle.

Recordings involving the Platte County Sheriff's Office, which had deputies chasing McGowan Friday night, show that deputies were told that Cadence had been shot. Deputies also radioed that McGowan was firing at them.

Wednesday the Leavenworth County attorney did not directly accuse McGowan of firing the shot, only saying Cadence died while McGowan was committing felonies, which is the basis of the first-degree murder charge.

Cadence's mother, Christina Harris, said she and McGowan got into a fight on Friday.

Harris said he pulled a gun on her, so she had to run to a neighbor's house to call police. By the time she went back to the home, McGowan had taken her daughter.

McGowan was not the child's biological father, but he had an on-again off-again relationship with Harris and was like a father to Cadence, family members say.

While Harris said she expected McGowan to harm her, she said she never expected McGowan would harm her daughter because she said he loved Cadence so much.

A community effort to support Cadence's family began after her death. Her mother's employer, the High Noon Saloon, spearheaded an effort to help pay for cremation and funeral costs as well as overall support for the family.

The bar had planned a benefit for Friday night, but had to postpone it.

One co-worker has been collecting donations and letting the public know about developments through the Facebook page called Angels for Cadence. They also got the support of a group called Bikers Against Child Abuse, who came from Kansas City to provide an escort from Leavenworth to her grave site.

Nearly 100 people attended her services Friday. Conard said his sanctuary was filled with supporters.

"It was a lot of sorrow, which was to be expected. But the services went extremely well. They just want to be able to move on and get through their grief and live again," he said.

Conard said his church will continue to support the Harris family and keep the young girl's memory alive.

"She was just a beautiful little girl, loved her mother very much and was just an active little child. Loved life greatly," he said. (so Mom, was that black cock worth it now?)

The church donated its services.

Affidavit: 5-year-old Kansas girl was shot by suspect, not police, during chase last summer
Published February 11, 2015

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. A court document says a 5-year-old girl who died during a police chase in eastern Kansas was shot by the man she was with, not by police officers.

Cadence Harris was found dead inside a car driven by Marcas McGowan after he exchanged gunfire with Leavenworth police last July. Prosecutors allege McGowan took the girl from her mother's home in Atchison and led police on a chase that ended in Leavenworth County.

Investigators provided details about who shot the girl after a judge ordered the release of an affidavit supporting felony first-degree murder and other charges against McGowan. He has pleaded not guilty.

Investigators concluded that a "defect" inside the car was consistent with a bullet hitting the girl from inside the vehicle.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A man who admitted to kidnapping and killing a five-year-old girl will be sentenced Tuesday.

According to U.S., attorney Tom Beall, the feds and Marcas McGowan reached a plea agreement where McGowan will spend the rest of his life in jail.

McGowan, 32, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and killing 5-year-old Cady Harris in July of 2014. Harris was the daughter of McGowan`s girlfriend Christina Harris.

The prosecutor says McGowan had an argument with his girlfriend, threatened her with a gun, grabbed Cady and took off.

McGowan led police on a chase through Atchison, across the river into Missouri and then back to Leavenworth where he eventually crashed through a barricade and stopped.

Police say he was shooting at them during the chase, and when the chase ended, police found Cady in the car dead. She had been shot.

At first there was a question of how she died, but forensic evidence showed that McGowan shot the child with his gun at close range in the car.

The plea agreement is only a recommendation agreed to by both the defendant and the prosecutor. It will be up to the judge who will either accept that agreement of reject it in favor of a punishment he finds acceptable.

The judge will make the final decision in the federal courthouse at 1:30 p.m.

FOX 4 will be providing updates online at on FOX 4 news at 5 and 6 p.m.
