Delaware State Student Shot and Killed While Driving to Work

New Castle County Police say a Delaware State University student was shot and killed in his car while he was on his way to work.

The department said in a news release that early Saturday, 19-year-old Malcolm Evans was driving to work when a single gunshot was fired into his car.

Police say the car crashed on Country Path Drive. Evans was taken to a hospital, where officers say he died Sunday afternoon.

The AP originally identified Evans as a University of Delaware student but the university later clarified that Evans attended Delaware State.

NEW CASTLE, DE (WTXF) - Police in New Castle, Delaware have arrested and charged a woman in the death of a 19-year-old Delaware State University student.

Cheryl Jennings, 46, of New Castle, has been charged with first degree murder in the July shooting death of Malcolm Evans.

Back on July 9th, around 4:00 a.m., Delaware State Police responded to a call of a one car accident involving Evans and his vehicle. Their investigation led to them to the scene of a shooting that occurred at on the unit block of Baywatch road.

Police say Evans was leaving his house to go to work, when a single gunshot was fired into his car, and struck him in the upper body. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Evans was transported to Christiana Medical Center where he died from his wounds the next afternoon.

Jennings was arrested Wednesday, and has been charged with first-degree murder, firearm possession during commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited due to past felony conviction.

She was arraigned and held without bail.

“Malcolm Evans was truly an innocent victim, a young man who lived with his parents and brother, went to college, worked a job and dreamed of becoming a doctor,” said County Executive Thomas P. Gordon. “His death is a loss to all of us and we continue to share his family’s grief.”

Few details about the reason for the shooting were available Friday since the indictment charging Jennings is sealed and police are continuing to investigate. Colonel E. M. Setting did, however, say that the victim and defendant do not appear to know each other.
