A Gilbert man is accused of breaking into a Scottsdale mosque where he used to work and cutting the imam who discovered him hovering over a donation box, according to Scottsdale police.

The suspect, 28-year-old Abdulrahman M El Turk, had been a maintenance worker at the Islamic Center of the North East Valley but was fired on Aug. 19 after suspicions that he had been stealing from the mosque, said Sgt. Ben Hoster, a Scottsdale police spokesman.

Hoster said that at 12:02 a.m. Monday, police were called to the center at 12125 E. Via Linda by the imam, who said he found Turk standing over the donation box. A struggle ensued.

Turk, who was armed with a knife, left the imam with a minor cut on his hand before he fled, according to Hoster.

Turk was arrested at his home in Gilbert on suspicion of aggravated assault, assault and burglary, Hoster said.

A call for comment to the Islamic Center of the North East Valley was not immediately returned Thursday evening.
