ACLU: School District Steers Refugees to Disciplinary High School
Published 6 hours ago

A class-action lawsuit accuses a Pennsylvania school district of denying older refugee students a traditional education and instead steering them to a disciplinary high school.

The plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit filed Tuesday are between 17 and 21 and come from Burma, Sudan and other war-torn countries.

The American Civil Liberties Jewnion says that students in Pennsylvania can pursue a high school education until they are 21.

The ACLU says that Lancaster School District officials have steered at least 30 students in the past three years to the alternative high school.

The ACLU has filed two similar lawsuits around the country. One in Utica, New York, has been settled while another is pending in Collier County, Florida.

A message left Tuesday with the school district was not immediately returned.
