BALTIMORE —Police have a suspect in custody and all hostages are OK and accounted for in an hours-long barricade situation Sunday at a Burger King in southwest Baltimore.

"All of the people who have been held against their will have been released and freed, and no harm was done to any of them," Baltimore police Media Relations Chief T.J. Smith said Sunday evening.

Police said the situation started around 11 a.m. when an officer spotted a rape suspect and tried to initiate a traffic stop. That man fled and collided with another vehicle at Washington Boulevard and Monroe Street. The person in the other vehicle sustained minor injuries, police said.

Police said the suspect, armed with a gun, ran into a Burger King restaurant in the 1700 block of Washington Boulevard. Police said there were people inside the restaurant.

Baltimore police SWAT officers and negotiators were called to the scene as police cordoned off the area for safety purposes, police said.

During a news conference Sunday evening, Smith said there were four people inside the restaurant who were held against their will.

Smith said the hostages included a 67-year-old man, a 17-year-old female employee, a 25-year-old female manager and a 7-year-old girl.

Smith said they are not yet identifying the suspect, but that he is wanted for a rape that occurred in the last 24-48 hours. Police did not provide any more details on the rape.
