Police Believe 4-Year-Old Girl Died After Accidentally Shooting Herself
June 24, 2016 6:01 PM By Natasha Brown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — On Friday, a community came together to remember a 4-year-old girl who died after being shot in the face in her North Philadelphia home.

A very passionate and somber vigil took place on Friday afternoon on the 1800 block of N. 20th Street in North Philadelphia.

Tears, prays and moments of silence took place for a 4-year-old girl who police believe shot herself. Mothers, feeling the pain of another mother’s loss, gathered to remember the little girl.

Investigators now believe that the child accidentally shot herself in the head  in her North Philadelphia home around noon on Thursday. She was found in an upstairs bedroom.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Community activist  Mel Wells took the vigil as an opportunity to urge residents to put down their guns and keep them out of the reach of children. He hopes to prevent another tragedy.

“We can start on the ground by just telling people please put your guns away from your children. Hide them tonight. Keep them out of the way of the kids and we’re asking our men, or anybody, please don’t come out with your guns and point them out while the women and the children and our seniors are around,” Wells said.

Many of the community members gathered held balloons that were pink and white that they released in honor of the 4-year-old.

Police are saying that they are not sure if any charges will be filed in this case. They say right now is too early to say.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Eyewitness News has learned that Demetrius Williams turned himself in to Philadelphia Police on Thursday night following the shooting death of a 4-year-old girl in North Philadelphia.

Williams is the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Shakeya Holmes. Holmes was charged on June 24, but officials announced that Williams was still on the loose. That ended with him turning himself in on Thursday night.

Shakeya Holmes, left, and Demetrius Williams have been charged in the shooting death of Holmes's 4-year-old daughter, Sani Holmes, June 23, 2016.

The little girl killed last week while holding a handgun found the firearm in a second-floor bedroom closet and pulled the trigger while looking down its barrel, police said in a statement Saturday announcing charges against the 4-year-old's mother and the mother's boyfriend.

Both adults have been charged in the June 23 shooting in North Philadelphia and the gun allegedly was illegally owned by the boyfriend, the girl's mother told police. The victim is identified as Sani Holmes, who lived with her mother and siblings in a house on the 1800 block of North 20th Street.

Demetrius Williams, 26, who turned himself in Thursday, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and three counts of Violations of the Uniform Firearms Acts: which are labeled as "former convict," "no license" and "on streets."

Online court records for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas show a long list of serious charges brought against Williams since he was 17. However, in three of the most serious cases, including counts of aggravated assault and conspiracy of attempted murder, charges against Williams were either dismissed or dropped because witnesses failed to appear.

Sani's mother, Shakeya Holmes, 25, is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and hindering apprehension.

"The victim’s mother originally provided false and misleading information to investigators," police said in the statement. "However, she did indicate that her boyfriend, 26 year old Demetrius Williams was responsible for bringing the gun into her home."

Holmes and Williams remained jailed without bail.
