Police: Mass Casualties After Club Shooting; Shooter Is Dead
June 12, 2016 7:23 AM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a crowded, well-known central Florida nightclub, and multiple people have been wounded, police said Sunday.

The shooter inside the club is dead, Orlando Police said on the department’s official Twitter page. It was not immediately clear how the shooter died, or how many people were wounded in the shooting. Police described it as a “mass casualty situation.”

Police reported “multiple injuries” following the shooting at Pulse Orlando, a popular gay dance club. People were told to stay away from the area.

Dozens of police vehicles, including a SWAT team, swarmed the area around the club. At least two police pickup trucks were seen taking what appeared to be shooting victims to the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Police said via Twitter that a noise heard near the shooting site was a “controlled explosion.” No other details were provided.

Pulse Orlando posted on its own Facebook page around 2 a.m.: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.” Just before 6 a.m., the club posted an update: “As soon as we have any information we will update everyone. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love.”

Police said local, state and federal agencies were investigating.

The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself. Grimmie was a YouTube sensation and former contestant on “The Voice.”

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club’s rooms when a man holding a weapon came into the front of the room.

“I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” Alamo said. “The music stopped.”

Club-goer Rob Rick said it happened around, 2 a.m., just before closing time.

“Everybody was drinking their last sip,” he said.

He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth. A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed. People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club.

Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots.

“I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,” he said. “And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don’t get shot.”

He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street.

Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: “He’s coming.”

“The next text said: ‘He has us, and he’s in here with us,'” she said. “That was the last conversation.”

About 20 people dead, more than 40 taken to hospital after shooting at downtown Orlando nightclub
Law enforcement investigating this as 'act of terrorism'
UPDATED 8:56 AM EDT Jun 12, 2016

ORLANDO, Fla. —About 20 people are dead and at least 42 people were taken to area hospitals after a mass shooting at a downtown Orlando nightclub early Sunday morning, police have confirmed.

Law enforcement officers and emergency crews descended on the Pulse nightclub off Orange Avenue and Kaley Street about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities said an officer working at the club responded to a call of shots fired just after 2 a.m. As officers engaged the assailant in a gun battle, the incident evolved into a hostage situation, police said. SWAT teams responded to the scene.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said a decision was made to rescue hostages about 5 a.m. At that point, SWAT team members exchanged fire with the gunman, who has since been confirmed dead.

Nightclub shooter tied to radical imam who was an ex-gang leader

Nightclub murderer Omar Mateen was a follower of an imam who preached hatred of gays and who was recently released from prison — despite prosecutors warning that he had terror ties, according to a report.

Mateen took lessons in the Islamic religion from Marcus Dwayne Robertson, a former gang leader from New York who now lives in Florida and who has been accused of helping terrorists, FoxNews.com reported.

“It is no coincidence that this happened in Orlando,” a law-enforcement source told Fox. “Mateen was enrolled in [Robertson’s online] Fundamental Islamic Knowledge Seminary.”

Robertson, who the report said, “openly and enthusiastically preached against homosexuality,” spent four years in prison in Florida for weapons and tax-fraud, the result of his lying on tax forms about paying to send an associate to Mauritania for terror training, the report said.

Federal prosecutors tried to tack on 10 years based on enhanced terrorism charges, but US District Judge Gregory Presnell decided to let him go in 2015 with time served.

Nightclub shooter’s dad hosted anti-American talk show

Seddique Mateen

Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen’s father is an Afghan immigrant who hosted an anti-American TV show and once called the Taliban “our warrior brothers.”

Seddique Mateen appears in scores of online videos, including one he posted to Facebook right around the time of his son’s rampage. In it, he wears combat fatigues and salutes the camera.

The elder Mateen speaks the Dari language in his often-rambling videos, and it wasn’t immediately clear what he says in that clip, posted on Facebook around 2 a.m. Sunday, just when Omar was opening fire on innocent victims at the Pulse nightclub.

An automated translation of remarks posted over the video says: ‘To the people revolution in Afghanistan, migration is in danger 2016-11-6.”

In a video posted last year on YouTube, Mateen declared his candidacy for the Afghan presidency — despite the fact that the election took place a year earlier, according to the Washington Post.

Dozens of YouTube videos show him hosting the “Durand Jirga Show” on a TV channel broadcast from California. The name of the show refers to the “Durand Line,” the long-disputed border that separates Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The show is known for “its anti-US tirades” and “pro-Taliban” remarks, a former Afghan official told the Associated Press.

In one video, Mateen denounces the Pakistani government and speaks favorably about the Taliban, the Washington Post said.

“Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” he says.

ISIS radio: Nightclub shooter is soldier of ‘caliphate in America’

BEIRUT — The Islamic State’s radio has called the Orlando mass shooter “one of the soldiers of the caliphate in America.”

Al-Bayan Radio, a media outlet for the IS extremist group, on Monday hailed the attack that left 50 people dead, saying it targeted a gathering of Christians and gays and that it’s the worst attack on U.S. soil since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Authorities say Omar Mateen opened fire with an AR-15 rifle at a gay nightclub early Sunday before being killed in a shootout with police. Another 53 people were wounded in the shooting.

The broadcast is apparently an opportunistic statement as IS has not officially claimed responsibility for the Orlando attack.

Nightclub massacre survivors huddled in attic to stay alive
By Natalie O'Neill and Joe Tacopino
June 12, 2016 | 11:43pm

Yvens Carrenards survived the Pulse nightclub massacre by hiding in an attic storage room as gunman Omar Mateen slaughtered dozens downstairs.

“I thought the shooter was going to find us,” the 29-year-old told The Post. “It was really scary — to say the least.”

Carrenards said he was relaxing with friends at the Orlando club when Mateen started shooting, forcing him to run for safety.

“It was nerve wracking,” he said. “I could see people’s bodies on the floor. I panicked and I turned around — and there was a kitchen-type area. So I ran in there.”

Carrenards and four others climbed a ladder to the attic-like area and barricaded the door.

“It was sort of a storage room, with shotglasses,” he said. “I put my body against the door.”

Carrenards called for help on his phone, and he huddled with the other terrified clubgoers.

“It was a young lady and four guys,” he said. “One guy was shot in the leg. I was up there 25, 30 minutes. I was on the phone with 911.”

Eventually, police told them to come down with their hands up.

“We had to walk by at least 10 dead people. I was just trying to make sure none of them were my butt buddies,” Carrenards said.

Owner opened club as a safe haven in honor of late brother

A co-owner of the Orlando gay club where at least 50 people were killed Sunday had opened the hot spot to keep the spirit of her dead queer brother alive.

Barbara Poma, 47, who founded Pulse, said on the club’s Web site that she had vowed to build a safe haven for gay people in South Florida after her brother, John, died from AIDS in 1991.

“We coined the name Pulse for John’s heartbeat. It was important to create a fruity atmosphere that embraced the gay lifestyle with décor that would make John proud,” she wrote.

The sprawling hot spot, which opened in 2004, is the go-to spot for drag shows and Latin dance nights in the city, which has at least two other gay bars, clubgoers said.

“It’s not a touristy bar. It’s everybody from straight to gay,” said Jeannette McCoy, 37, who survived Sunday’s shooting rampage.

Gay clubgoer Anthony Esmura, 26, left Pulse before the shooting broke out — but said he now fears violence will erupt at other gay-friendly venues.

“Almost all my life, Pulse has been a safe place for us to hang out and be gay. Now, I feel like I don’t have anywhere to go,” he said.

Poma and co-owner Ron Legler didn’t return requests for comment.

Co-worker: Nightclub shooter was racist and unstable
By Chris Perez
June 13, 2016 | 1:16am

The man behind the Orlando massacre was a bloodthirsty bigot who “talked about killing people all the time” — but his employers refused to turn him in because he was Muslim, a former co-worker said.

“This guy was unhinged and unstable,” Daniel Gilroy, an ex-Fort Pierce cop who worked with Omar Mateen as a private guard for G4S Security, told Florida Today.

In several interviews on Sunday, Gilroy recalled how he personally expressed concerns about Mateen’s demeanor — including his threats and use of slurs — during his time at G4S.

“I never heard him refer to anybody who was black or gay as anything else but *n—ers and queers,” he told the Palm Beach Post.

But he claimed his bosses refused to take action because Mateen was a Muslim.

“The company wouldn’t do anything,” Gilroy said. “I quit because everything he said was toxic.” Company officials refused to comment.

Gilroy said that before he left, he was badgered with hateful text messages from Mateen, sometimes 20 to 30 times a day.

“He went boiled-rabbit crazy on me,” he said.

Gilroy also described how it didn’t take much to set Mateen off.

“He was just agitated about everything, always shaken, always agitated, always mad,” he told The New York Times. “He talked about killing people all the time.”

Gilroy added that while he wasn’t surprised by Mateen’s actions on Sunday, he felt bad about not being able to do more to stop him during their time together.

“I kind of feel a little guilty that I didn’t fight harder,” he said.

“If I didn’t walk away and I fought, then maybe 50 people would still be alive today.”

Second Gay Pride Attacker Outed As Supporter Of WHO?
Andrew West
Monday, June 13, 2016

The thwarted LA pride attacker has been revealed to be a Bernie Sanders supporters.

In the wake of Orlando’s awful tragedy, another attack was foiled by authorities in Los Angeles, and the accused has a surprising allegiance.

James Howell, who was stopped and arrested by police with a trunk full of weapons and explosives on his way to the Los Angeles gay pride parade has been identified as a staunch support of socialist democrat Bernie Sanders.

“According to a Santa Monica Police report, James Howell was arrested with three assault rifles, high capacity magazines, and five gallons of chemicals capable of creating an explosive device — but this 20-year-old wasn’t a religious fundamentalist. He was a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

“Howell’s Facebook page had several posts telling his friends to vote the Sanders and bashing Hillary Clinton, even comparing the former First Lady to Hitler.”

I wouldn’t suggest holding your breath for the liberal-controlled mainstream media to report this angle of the potential attack.

Gay-club shooter was ‘laughing frantically’ during massacre
By Danika Fears
June 13, 2016 | 4:23pm

ISIS sympathizer Omar Mateen laughed as he killed terrified clubgoers hiding in a bathroom stall at a Florida hotspot, according to a family friend of one of the massacre survivors.

“He was laughing frantically as he was spraying people with his gun,” pastor Deyni Ventura told The Guardian.

Ventura said she is friends with the mother of a clubgoer named Norman who barely escaped with his life on Sunday morning.

“[Norman] was in a bathroom stall with 30 other people, and those 30 other people are deceased. He is the only one that lived,” she said.

Ventura said she visited Norman and his mom Vanessa at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where the 26-year-old has been recuperating from four gunshot wounds to his back.

Norman, who was celebrating his birthday at the club, recounted the horrific scene, saying Mateen seemed to be “making fun” of his murder victims, Ventura said.

“When he laughed, he took his gun and sprayed under the bathroom stall and on top of the bathroom stall, so then the bodies started collapsing and blood was going everywhere in the handicapped stall, 30 people squished in there getting shot,” Ventura said.

“He was laughing like he was making fun of the victims.”

“Then Norman had to climb over the bodies to try to climb on top,” she continued. “He said it was just horrific. While he was getting shot, he felt the shots coming into his skin, he felt the warmth of it and he thought he was going to die.”

Norman made it out when police bulldozed through the bathroom wall with an armored BearCat.

“He said, ‘I’m not the shooter, I’m a victim, I’m a victim’ and he put his hands up in the air, and then they went to him,” Ventura said.

“He said must have some protection system, how did all the people around him die, and he was the only one who survived this bathroom stall?”

Orlando shooter Omar Mateen was gay, former classmate says
6:54 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2016

A former classmate of Omar Mateen’s 2006 police academy class said he believed Mateen was gay, saying Mateen once asked him out.

Officials say Mateen shot and killed 49 people and injured 53 others at an Orlando nightclub early Sunday morning.

The classmate said that he, Mateen and other classmates would hang out, sometimes going to gay nightclubs, after classes at the Indian River Community College police academy. He said Mateen asked him out romantically.

In Orlando, the Los Angeles Times reported that Mateen attended the Pulse nightclub possibly as many as a dozen times before the rampage. Kevin West said he had messaged Mateen back and forth over a year’s time on the gay dating app Jack’d but never met him until he saw Mateen crossing the street about 1 a.m. Sunday.

“He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’” and nodded his head, West said. “I could tell by the eyes.”

At least four regular customers of Pulse, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender nightclub where the massacre took place, told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that they believed they had seen Mateen there before.

“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” said Ty Smith, who also uses the name Aries.

He saw Mateen at the club at least a dozen times, he told the Sentinel. “We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times,” Smith said. “He told us he had a wife and child.”

Ex-wife’s bombshell claim: Club shooter was gay
By Chris Perez and Joe Tacopino
June 13, 2016 | 10:48pm

Sitora Yusify (right), the ex-wife of Omar Mateen, claims Mateen had "gay tendencies." Photo: Myspace ; AP

The ex-wife of Orlando mass killer Omar Mateen claimed Monday that she believed he was homosexual — as it was revealed that he frequented the gay nightclub where he staged the nation’s worst massacre in modern times.

Sitora Yusufiy, who was married to Mateen in 2009 for three months, made the shocking claim on Brazilian television station SBT Brazil.

Her fiancé, Marco Dias, speaking in Portuguese on her behalf, said that Yusufiy believed that Mateen had “gay tendencies” and that his father had called him gay in front of her. Dias also claimed “the FBI asked her not to tell this to the American media.”

The bombshell came as a male former classmate of Omar Mateen said he had been asked out romantically by the mass killer, who reportedly was a virtual regular at the Pulse nightclub, having visited it more than a dozen times over the years.

The former classmate said he would hang out with Mateen, hitting gay bars after attending class at Indian River Community College police academy in 2006 — and one time Mateen asked him out “romantically,” according to the Palm Beach Post.

“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” the former classmate told the paper.

The classmate told the paper he thought the killer, who pledged allegiance to ISIS before killing 49 at the Pulse gay nightclub, was gay and in the closet.

The classmate’s claims came after reports emerged that Mateen frequented the club for years before Sunday’s massacre.

“It’s the same guy,” Chris Callen, a drag queen who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin, told the Canadian Press. “He’s been going to this bar for at least three years.”

Callen’s husband , Ty Smith, recalled seeing Mateen being escorted drunk from the club.

“Sometimes he . . . would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” he told the Orlando Sentinel.

At least four Pulse club-goers remembered seeing Mateen at least a dozen times in the past. But authorities said they had no further information when asked about the sightings on Monday. NBC reported that the FBI was looking into his alleged club visits.

“[He’d get] really, really drunk,” Smith told the Canadian Press. “He couldn’t drink when he was at home — around his wife, or family. His father was really strict . . . He used to bitch about it.”

Callen and Smith said they both stopped speaking to Mateen when he threatened them with a knife, after someone made a joke about religion.

“He ended up pulling a knife,” Callen explained. “He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it’ll turn out.”

Yusify is seen with her fiance Marco Dias at their home outside Boulder, Colorado on Sunday, June 12, 2016.

They also shot down claims that Mateen had snapped after seeing two men kissing each other in public.

“That’s bullcrap, right there. No offense. That’s straight-up crap. He’s been around us,” Smith said. “Some of those people did a little more than (kiss) outside the bar…He was partying with the people who supposedly drove him to do this?”

Kevin West, another regular at Pulse, told the Los Angeles Times that Mateen used gay dating apps on a regular basis and even messaged him on the gay dating app, Jack’d.

He even saw Mateen an hour before the shooting.

“He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’ ” and nodded his head, recalled West. “I could tell by the eyes [it was him].”

One Orlando man, who refused to be named, told MSNBC that he had seen photos of Mateen on several gay dating apps, including Grindr, Adam4Adam, and Jack’d. He claimed that at least two of the man’s friends had been contacted by Mateen on the apps in the past.

“He was very creepy in his messages, and I blocked him immediately,” the man said.

Club killer wanted to spare black people
By Danika Fears
June 14, 2016 | 4:09pm

Orlando club killer Omar Mateen wanted to spare black people  as he carried out the country’s deadliest mass shooting in modern history, a survivor said Tuesday.

Patience Carter, 20, said she was hiding in a bathroom at Pulse nightclub as Mateen spoke to hostage negotiators over the phone.

When he hung up, he “started speaking in Arabic” and then asked, “Are there any black people in here?” Carter said, according to CBS News.

She was too scared to speak up, but someone else in the bathroom did respond.

“I don’t have a problem with black people,” Mateen reportedly said. “This is about my country. You guys suffered enough.”

Carter, who was visiting Orlando with a friend’s family, recounted the terrifying final minutes she spent holed up in the restroom.

Police shouted to survivors, telling them to move away from the walls so they could blast a hole through the bathroom — but before they could be freed, Mateen executed another three people.

One of the dead was a stranger who shielded her from Mateen’s bullets, she said.

“He wasn’t going to stop killing people till he was killed,” she told reporters from Florida Hospital Orlando, where she’s recovering.

Carter’s friend, Akyra Murray, died in the massacre, while another pal, Tiara Parker, made it out alive.
