Nabbed turnstile jumper wanted for 1990 attempted murder

Cops busted a turnstile jumper who turned out to be a fugitive wanted for attempted murder, police said.

Anibal :confused: Vargas, 65, of The Bronx was nabbed Thursday afternoon at the Bleecker Street station in Greenwich Village, *according to police.

After placing him :confused: in handcuffs, a transit officer soon discovered Vargas had been on the lam for nearly 26 years in an attempted murder in Massachusetts.

The revelation came only after Vargas handed the cop, Jorge Roca, an outdated and counterfeit New York state license which led authorities to dig deeper to uncover his true identity, cops said.

Police learned Vargas was wanted for trying to kill somebody at a party he *attended on Aug. 26, 1990, in Worchester, Mass.

Vargas opened fire into a crowd of 30 people, striking a man with whom he was feuding and a separate partygoer, cops said.

On Friday, he was charged with possession of a forged instrument, theft of service and criminal trespass as a result of his latest brush with the law.

Officials said Vargas eventually will be extradited to Massachusetts to face the attempted-murder charge.
