East Cleveland Police find two more bodies near Shaw and Hayden

EAST CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

East Cleveland police have discovered two bodies on the same block where they found a decomposing body in a garage Friday.

The chief of police confirmed that homicide investigators found the bodies Saturday afternoon in an abandoned house, just steps away from where they discovered a woman's body Friday.

During a news conference Saturday, the East Cleveland chief of police said that the bodies are linked to Friday's discovery. The chief also gave descriptions of the bodies, which are all young black females. Police suspect they were killed in the last six to ten days.

According to the chief, the first victim was 5' 3" and weighed 110 lbs. The second victim was wearing a green hoodie, and had a tattoo of a pink and green flower on her left thigh. The third victim was wearing a purple leopard print top.

All three of the bodies were found wrapped in plastic.

Early Friday morning cops were called to the scene of a body found at Shaw and Hayden in East Cleveland. The body was found in a bag, next to a car in a garage, behind an apartment building.

Police connected the car to a Michael Madison who lives in the same neighborhood where the body was located.

After a short standoff at his mother's house, Madison was arrested at the corner of E. 197 and Chickasaw.

Police say Madison alluded that there may be more bodies in the area, which prompted the search today.

Brandon Trussell said he was recently incarcerated with Madison.

"He was not stable," said Trussell.

He said Madison told him he admired convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — Police plan to continue a search Sunday for possibly more victims after three bodies were found wrapped in plastic bags in a Cleveland suburb.

The bodies, believed to be female, were found about 100 to 200 yards apart and a 35-year-old man was arrested and is a suspect in all three deaths, although he has not yet been charged, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said Saturday.

The suspect is a registered sex offender and has served prison time, the mayor said. In police interviews, the man led them to believe he might have been influenced by convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell, Norton said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," the mayor said.

Sowell was found guilty in 2011 of killing 11 women and hiding their remains around his Cleveland home. He is in prison on a death sentence.

Asked if the suspect has a fascination with the Sowell case, the mayor said: "We believe so."

Police Commander Mike Cardilli said a woman's body was found Friday in a garage and two other bodies were found Saturday — one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house.

All three people are believed to have been killed in the last six to 10 days.

Police did not know the identities of the three victims. Norton said police believe the three were female, although the bodies had not yet been examined by the medical examiner.

Norton said the bodies were each in the fetal position, wrapped in several layers of trash bags. He said detectives continue to interview the suspect, who used his mother's address in Cleveland, the mayor said, in registering as a sex offender.

Cardilli said the man was arrested after a standoff with police Friday. Police did not immediately release the suspect's name. He was jailed in East Cleveland, the mayor said.

"The person in custody, some of the things he said to investigators made us go back today," the mayor said.

Police searched vacant houses over about three blocks in the neighborhood Saturday and planned to expand their search Sunday, Norton said.

The police, FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department went through yards and abandoned houses and used dogs trained to find cadavers.

The neighborhood in East Cleveland, of some 17,000 residents, has many abandoned houses and authorities want to be thorough, the mayor said.

"Hopefully, we pray to God, this is it," he said.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — The search resumes today for more bodies in the neighborhood where three dead women, their bodies wrapped in plastic, have been found since Friday.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet identified the three black women found wrapped in multiple plastic bags near the intersection of Hayden and Shaw avenues.

Suspect Michael Madison, 35, of Cleveland, was arrested Friday night after a two-hour standoff at his mother's home on Chickasaw Avenue. He has not been charged.

In police interviews, Madison led investigators to believe he might have been influenced by Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press.

“He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence,” Norton said.

Sowell is in prison on a death sentence after being found guilty in 2011 of killing 11 women and hiding their remains around his Cleveland home.

Authorities believe the women have been killed within the last 10 days. The first body, 5 feet three and 110 pounds, was found in a carport Friday morning near the corner of Hayden and Shaw avenues.

The other two bodies were found Saturday afternoon. One was in a weeded lot about 150 feet from the carport. She had a pink flower with green leaves tattooed on her left thigh. The third body was in the basement of a vacant home on East 139th Street, adjacent to the weedy lot. The body was near a broken window.

"I don't know if there are anymore bodies out there," Mayor Gary Norton said Saturday. "It is all tying back to the same guy.

East Cleveland police, the FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and Cleveland police are involved in the investigation. The law enforcement personnel is being aided dogs trained to find cadavers.

Residents told reporters Saturday that the suspect had been in the area talking aggressively to women.

Madison is a sexual offender who registered with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office after being released from prison on an attempted rape conviction in 2002. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years. He was given the least serious offender status, which requires registration once a year for 10 years. His local criminal history otherwise includes drug possession and trafficking.

Law enforcement and FBI stand at the back of a boarded-up home where bodies were found earlier in the day Saturday, July 20, 2013 in East Cleveland, Ohio. Police say three bodies have been found in plastic bags in East Cleveland.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — Searchers rummaging through vacant houses in a neighborhood where three female bodies were found wrapped in plastic bags should be prepared to find one or two more victims, a police chief said Sunday.

Police Chief Ralph Spotts told the volunteers to brace themselves for the smell of rotting bodies and to look out for trash bags that might conceal a body. He declined to elaborate on his comments about the possible additional victims.

When asked about Spotts' remark, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said authorities have "lots of reasons" to suspect there are more victims, but he refused to say why.

A 35-year-old registered sex offender in custody is a suspect in the deaths, Norton said. The suspect, who was arrested Friday after a police standoff, has indicated he might have been influenced by Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell, who was convicted in 2011 of killing 11 women and sentenced to death, Norton said.

"He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," Norton told The Associated Press.

The man hasn't been charged.

A report of a foul odor emanating from a home led police to the discovery of the first body, found in a garage, and to the suspect. Two other bodies were found Saturday — one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house. The bodies, all female, were found about 100 to 200 yards apart, and authorities say the victims were killed in the last six to 10 days.

The bodies were each in the fetal position, wrapped in several layers of trash bags, Norton said. He said detectives continue to interview the suspect, who used his mother's address in Cleveland in registering as a sex offender, the mayor said.

'MIGHT BE AN INFLUENCE': Serial killer Anthony Sowell, seen here at the start of his trial in 2011, murdered 11 women and hid their bodies in his home.

Cuyahoga County medical examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson said Sunday that the bodies were in advanced stages of decomposition and that it would take several days to identify them and how they died.

About three dozen volunteers, including community anti-crime activists, fanned out Sunday morning across yards, through vacant houses and along a railroad to help police search. The chief advised them to watch for missing floor boards as they looked inside houses. One young searcher crawled under a board screwed across a door to go inside a house to search.

"The MO of each body we've found so far was wrapped up in a lot of garbage bags, so if you see anything .... and it might not look like it's a body, but it could be — because each bag, the way he had each person was in a fetal position," Spotts told searchers before they began. "It didn't look like a person could actually fit in the bag."

August 6, 2013

A prosecutor says no decision will be made on the death penalty until at least next month in the case against an Ohio man charged with killing three women whose bodies were found wrapped in trash bags.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty made the comment during a pretrial hearing Tuesday for 35-year-old Michael Madison. McGinty says a committee in his office is reviewing whether the death penalty is appropriate.

Madison responded briefly to questions from the judge, who scheduled another hearing for Aug. 20.

Defense attorney David Grant said afterward that his client's mental state would be evaluated, but he did not elaborate.

Madison was arrested last month after the bodies were found in a dilapidated neighborhood in East Cleveland. He is being held on $6 million bond.

Michael Madison will appear in court by James W. Wade III (http://callandpost.com/news/2013/oct/31/michael-madison-will-appear-court/)

Today, Thursday October 31, Michael Madison will be arraigned. A Cuyahoga County grand jury re-indicted Madison Tuesday for the murders of three women whose bodies were found in East Cleveland in July.

He could now face the death penalty.

Madison, 36, faces aggravated murder charges in the deaths of Angela Deskins, 38, Shetisha Sheeley, 28, and Shirellda Terry, 18.

The aggravated murder charge includes allegations that the murders represented a “course of conduct” by Madison and that he committed them while committing another felony.

He also now faces additional charges of kidnapping, gross abuse of a corpse, rape, and having weapons under disability.

Madison was arrested July 19. Police say he had a shovel and garbage bags in the trunk of his car the day he was arrested.

A man who was in the East Cleveland jail with Madison at the time said Madison admitted to the murders.

Madison is a convicted sex offender.

His court records show a 2001 arrest for kidnapping, attempted rape and gross sexual imposition.

In 2002, as part of a plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to attempted rape and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Michael Madison found guilty of killing three women in East Cleveland
Posted 2:21 pm, May 5, 2016

CLEVELAND-- A Cuyahoga County jury convicted an East Cleveland man in the deaths of three women.

On Thursday, Michael Madison, 37, was found guilty on 14 counts, including aggravated murder, rape, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse. The jurors concluded Madison met specifications, making him eligible for the death penalty.

The bodies of Angela Deskins, Shetisha Sheeley and Shirellda Terry were found in plastic bags near Madison's East Cleveland home in 2013.

The jury heard closing statements in the case on Wednesday. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Nancy McDonnell read the verdict Thursday afternoon.

Jurors will hear arguments in the death penalty phase of the trial next week.
