Coroner: Woman critically injured in Erie home assault has died
April 23, 2016

ERIE, Pa. -- An Erie woman savagely beaten by a home invader Tuesday died today at UPMC Hamot.

Kum C. Miller, 58, died before just before noon today, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said.

An autopsy will be performed Monday.

Miller was beaten in her home in Erie's Frontier neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Police previously arraigned Kyle M. Johnson, 25, of Cleveland, on attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges in the attack.

Police said that Johnson attacked Miller and her husband, Gary M. Miller, in their home at 311 Crescent Drive after assaulting and abducting a former girlfriend in the Cleveland area on Monday.

The kidnap victim, Brandi Shakir, 23, told police that Johnson "was looking for a place to collect his thoughts and possibly get a different vehicle, as his vehicle was too well-known to law enforcement," Erie Deputy Police Chief Donald Dacus said Wednesday.

Johnson pried open a door of the Miller home with a crowbar, then used the crowbar to beat Kum Miller, according to a criminal complaint filed by Erie police detectives. Kum Miller also was stabbed in the neck with a box cutter and dragged into her home's attic.

Gary Miller arrived home after the attack, police said. He encountered Johnson inside his home, fought with him and screamed for help. A neighbor that responded shot Johnson in the right shoulder and left leg when Johnson tried to flee as police arrived.

Gary Miller was treated at UPMC Hamot and released.

The neighbor was not charged. His actions were justified, Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri said Thursday, after an investigation.

Johnson is in Erie County Prison. He was treated for the gunshot wounds at UPMC Hamot and released before his Tuesday night arraignment on the earlier charges.

OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio-- Oakwood Village police are searching for a missing 23-year-old woman.

Police said they believe Kyle Johnson, 25, abducted Brandi Shakir Monday morning. He is considered armed and dangerous. It's believed Johnson, who is Shakir's ex-boyfriend, set the house she was staying at on fire, then took her.

According to Oakwood Village police, Johnson assaulted Shakir last week, leaving her with two black eyes and a fractured eye socket. Police say Shakir had a protection order in place against Johnson following that attack.

Johnson was last seen leaving Oakwood Village at about 10:35 a.m. driving a 1999 black Acura with Ohio license plate EXV6585. It may have damage to the front passenger side.
