A panhandler slashed a waiter in a Greenwich Village diner Wednesday night after the manager told him to take a hike because he was hassling customers for change.

The beggar initially walked into the Silver Spurs diner near NYU at about 8 p.m. and started asking people for money, according to police.

The diner manager asked him to leave, but he returned minutes later and slashed a waiter in the face.

“It was bad, really bad,” one shaken employee said.

The waiter was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

The suspect was described as a homeless man in his mid-20s.

The incident was the latest in a spate of knife attacks in the city in the past few months.

Early this week, two people were slashed in separate incidents in Manhattan.

Early Tuesday, a cabdriver was dropping off a rider in Harlem when the man pulled a knife and sliced him from ear to mouth, police said.

The driver was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where doctors administered stitches. The suspect was quickly apprehended and charged with assault.

Late Monday night, a 22-year-old man walking through the Financial District was attacked, cops said.

He got into a fight with someone at Cliff and John streets at about 11:30 p.m., and the assailant pulled a blade and cut him, cops said.

That suspect was still on the loose.

Early last Friday, an assailant sliced Bronx student Paula Delos Santos, 20, across the face in an early-morning attack that left her with stitches across a three-inch wound.

The pretty brunette had just gotten off a 2 train and was on her way home when she was attacked from behind.

There have been nearly a dozen slashings in the subway system so far this year.

Michael Palladino, the president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, called the attacks “definitely disturbing” and said subway riders should not use or display their cellphones in the system.

Year-to-date, there have been 471 stabbings and slashings through last Sunday — compared to 395 last year for the same time period, police said.

A teenage boy in braces soliciting money for a basketball team from patrons in a Greenwich Village diner left a man with 120 stitches after he slashed him across the face Wednesday night, police sources said.

The teen walked into the Silver Spurs Restaurant on LaGuardia Place near NYU at about 8 p.m. and asked people for money for the unknown team, sources said.

The 25-year-old victim – who sources say is a friend of the owner’s and not a waiter, despite earlier reports – then told the teen that he had to leave the eatery because he was annoying customers.

“I’ll be back,” the boy told the man before leaving, according to sources.

The boy returned to the diner about five to 10 minutes later, walked up to the victim and said, “You going to speak to me like that,” sources said.

The teen then whipped out a boxcutter and slashed the man, who was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He was released after getting stitched up.

“It was bad, really bad,” said one shaken employee at the diner.

The suspect, who is still at large, was described as between 15 and 17 years old, about 5-foot-7 and 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, dark jeans and carrying a purple folder and a small gym bag.

It’s unclear if the teen is a vagrant.

The incident follows a spate of knife attacks around the city over the past few months.

When asked about the latest slashing on WOR 710 AM Thursday morning, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said people should not be concerned when it comes to the uptick in city slashings.

“These are unfortunate [incidents],” Bratton said. “They occur, but the actual reality is crime is consistently down in the city.”

“There is a lot of focus on the issue of slashings and it’s appropriate that there is, but what is occurring occurs in this city year after year,” he said, adding that “it gets reduced over time.”

Bratton said that many of the slashing suspects “have significant psychiatric issues” and ruled out the notion of a pattern or copycats.

“These are horrific incidents,” he said. “None of them are part of a pattern.”

He is described as a light skinned black or Hispanic male. He was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and carried a gym bag with a file folder at the time of the attack.

Police have arrested the teen who slashed the face of a worker at a Greenwich Village diner, cops said.

The punk was cuffed early Tuesday and is being questioned at the Sixth Precinct.

The suspect walked into the Silver Spurs diner on LaGuardia Place on Wednesday and began asking customers for donations for his basketball team, police said.

Busboy Bobby Barbot, 25, tried to get the retainer-wearing kid to leave the restaurant, cops said.

But the boy returned a short time later and cut Barbot’s face so deeply that the wound required 120 stitches, the man said.

The teen has not yet been charged, and his identity has not been released.

A teen who slashed the face of a Greenwich Village busboy admitted that he did it but only after he was smacked by the restaurant worker, prosecutors said Wednesday in court.

“The defendant was in Silver Spurs restaurant collecting donations when he was asked to leave by the institution and escorted out by the complainant,” said ADA Eun-Ha Kim of 16-year-old Domincio Howington.

Bobby Barbot struck Howington who then whipped out a knife and “slashed him on the face” from his cheek to his chin, Kim said. The wound needed 130 stitches.

The prosecutor did not disclose why Barbot, 25, hit the teen in the face during the Feb. 17 altercation at the LaGuardia Place eatery.

Howington admitted to the crime during an interview with prosecutors, the ADA said at his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Defense lawyer Wendell Cruz asked for reasonable bail, arguing that the busboy was the aggressor.

“The complainant is at least nine years older and did initiate an assault, did strike him and made several attempts to strike him,” the lawyer said.

He added that Howington has no criminal record and is a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Judge Kevin McGrath set bail at $50,000 bond over $25,000 cash. He faces two counts of first-degree assault.
