STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- "Of course I was scared."

That's how a 25-year-old cashier at Nothing but the Best Deli described his reaction when a man walked into the Mariners Harbor shop recently and began wildly swing a pipe, menacing the worker and busting up a slushy machine :pduring a rampage that was caught on surveillance video.

"I thought maybe he had a gun or something, and then he started to point the pipe around," said the cashier, who requested anonymity.

As seen in the video, the assailant lunged toward the counter and began swinging the metal object wildly, causing a rack with items on it to crash down to the floor.

The total damages, including a slushy machine, were more than $3,000, according to the cashier and the criminal complaint.

Derrick Edwards, 47, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection with the Jan. 25 incident at the 182 South Ave. store.

He was arrested Feb. 12, just a day after police released the surveillance footage.
