Anarae Schunk, the 20-year-old University of Minnesota student reported missing on Monday, was last seen with Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, 31, who was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Palagor Jobi.

Burnsville police confirmed Wednesday that a 1983 Buick LeSebre registered to Chavez-Nelson has been accounted for. Police believe Chavez-Nelson used the car as he fled the scene of the murder, but police found him driving another vehicle upon his arrest.

$5,000 REWARD

Burnsville police said a $5,000 reward is being offered from a private citizen for information regarding the location of Anarae Schunk.

Police are requesting that no volunteer search parties be formed, as it could compromise evidence in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Burnsville Police Department at 952-895-4594 or 952-895-INFO (4636).

SECOND SUSPECT

Police also arrested 24-year-old Rosemount woman Ashley Conrade. Police have not released any further details of her arrest.

CHAVEZ-NELSON NOT TALKING

Chavez-Nelson hasn't revealed anything about his relationship with Schunk relationship, why she was with him at Nina's Grill on the night of the shooting, or any information related to her whereabouts.

According Schunk's brother, Owen Schunk, his sister and Chavez-Nelson dated for a few months last year. Owen Schunk has viewed surveillance of his sister leaving Nina's Grill with Chavez-Nelson, but didn't think it was particularly telling.

"The surveillance cameras in the exterior of the video, he's opening the door, she's in front of him they're not shaking hands, holding hands, engaging in any sort of contact, it seems cordial," he said.

U student, 20, missing after ex-boyfriend arrested in Burnsville bar slaying

Police and family members of a University of Minnesota college student missing since Saturday are searching for her, after her ex-boyfriend was arrested as a suspect in a fatal shooting outside a Burnsville bar.

Surveillance video shows Anarae Kristine Schunk, 20, of Burnsville walking into Nina's Grill with ex-boyfriend Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, 31, late Saturday or early Sunday, according to Schunk's family.

Early Sunday, Palagor Obang Jobi, 23, of Burnsville was fatally shot outside the bar, his body found in the parking lot by police when they arrived. The shooter fled the scene.

Chavez-Nelson was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Rosemount and remained in custody late Tuesday for questioning. Police say he is a suspect in the slaying.

But Schunk was nowhere to be found.

Her family said Tuesday evening that she has been out of contact with them for three days -- unheard of for the young woman who talked to them nearly every day. The last time they saw her was when they dropped her off at a Burnsville coffee shop Saturday.

Schunk's older brother, Owen Schunk, said his sister met Chavez-Nelson in the summer of 2012 at a bus stop, when she was commuting to college. Schunk, a third-year sociology student, was born and raised in Burnsville.

Chavez-Nelson told her he was working in hedge fund management :p-- but then asked for a $5,000 loan.

They broke up six months later, on Thanksgiving, after Schunk learned that Chavez-Nelson had been detained by Eagan police. She also learned he was living with a woman who was the mother of his child, Owen Schunk said.

Then, a month or two ago, Chavez-Nelson contacted Schunk again, wanting to meet.

Although she never told her family -- who learned of it after the fact from friends -- Anarae Schunk contacted Chavez-Nelson multiple times, Owen Schunk said. But she seemed nervous.

She had recently moved to an apartment on campus and "made it very clear to her roommate that she didn't want him to know where she lived," Owen Schunk said.

"Her friends there had never met him," he added.

On Sept. 16, Anarae Schunk agreed to meet Chavez-Nelson but told a friend, "so that somebody knew where she was," Owen Schunk said.

"We think that she was trying to get something back from him. She had lent him $5,000 a year ago and was trying to get some of it back," Owen Schunk said. "But he was asking for a commitment to be with him again, and she didn't want that. She wanted to cut ties and move on."

As for why she never told family that she had contacted him multiple times in past weeks, "She knew me and my family's take on him," Owen Schunk said. "It was not positive. ... She kept a lot of that private, didn't want us to talk her out of something."

Around noon Saturday, Anarae Schunk's parents dropped her off at a Caribou Coffee at 2149 Cliff Road.

They haven't seen her since.

Charges Expected In Death Of ‘U’ Of M Student
June 27, 2014 9:53 AM

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Murder charges are expected Friday in the death of a college student who vanished nine months ago.

Police found 20-year-old Anarae Schunk’s body in a ditch near Lonsdale, Minn.

The University of Minnesota student disappeared last September after meeting up with an ex-boyfriend who owed her money.

She was last seen with him at a bar in Burnsville, Minn. where police said he shot and killed a man.

Schunk, her ex and another woman then apparently went to a townhouse in Rosemount, Minn.

She was never heard from again.

Prosecutors say they’ll charge Shavelle Chavez-Nelson and Ashley Conrade in Schunk’s murder Friday.

Police arrested Conrade Wednesday.

Chavez-Nelson is already serving time in prison for another crime.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - A 32-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for a bar shooting that left one person dead.

Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, of Rosemount, was found guilty of both first- and second-degree murder in a fatal shooting that took place on Sept. 22, 2013 outside Nina's Grill in Burnsville.

Palagor Obang Jobi, 23, of Savage was killed in the shooting, found dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds.

Thirty-three-year-old Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, who is currently residing in the Stillwater prison, pleaded guilty to one count of murder in the second degree (unintentional), in connection with the stabbing death of Schunk, 20, in September 2013 at a home in Rosemount. Charges of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder (with intent) were dismissed.

Judge Kathryn Messerich sentenced Chavez-Nelson (also known as Anthony Lee Nelson) to an agreed upon sentence of 204 months in prison, though he will receive credit for already serving more than two years.
