CHICAGO — A 9-year-old Chicago boy who was fatally shot this week was “lured” from a park into an alley and executed because of his father’s alleged gang connections, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Thursday, in a crime he described as among the most “unfathomable” in his 35 years in policing.

Tyshawn Lee, an elementary school student headed to his grandmother’s house, was shot in the head and back Monday in a neighborhood alley on the city’s South Side.

McCarthy told reporters Thursday that the slaying was the result of two gangs fighting, potentially in a string of retaliatory events dating back months. He said the boy’s father isn’t cooperating with police.

McCarthy called it probably the “most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing.”

“Everybody is sick; everybody is disgusted.”

The child’s father, Pierre Stokes, has disagreed with authorities’ characterization of him and said he’s easy to find. He hasn’t talked about whether he’s a gang member but said police have spent more time pursuing him than finding out who killed his son.

“I answered every question they asked me,” he told reporters Thursday not far from the spot where his son was killed. “They’re not asking me questions that I know. I don’t know the questions that they asked me.”

Police have executed several search warrants in the investigation, but refuse to release details. A “person of interest” turned himself in to police Wednesday and was released between late Wednesday and early Thursday without charges.

Authorities have said they know the gangs and individuals involved but need help assessing who did what. They reiterated a plea for any information that will help lead to charges, acknowledging fears people may have of being targeted for speaking out.

“We’ll take those steps to keep it as quiet as we can,” McCarthy said.

At least $35,000 is being offered for information leading to charges in connection with the boy’s death. Members of the Faith Community of St. Sabina, a well-known South Side Roman Catholic church, have raised money from around the country.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a priest at St. Sabina who is known for his anti-violence activism, said he would pay money out of his own pocket to help anyone with information move from Chicago.

“This was not a drive-by. This was not a spray of bullets. A baby was executed,” Pfleger said. “We have gone to a new low that’s removed what used to be some codes, some barriers, some lines that used to be drawn in the community, some things in our city that were not acceptable.”

Mother of boy shot dead denies spending donated funds on new car

The mother of a 9-year-old boy shot to death earlier this week is being accused of spending money donated through a "Go Fund Me" effort intended for funeral expenses on a new car.:p

Karla Lee is strongly denying the claim Saturday night and commenting on those who have taken to social media to criticize her.

The mother of slain Tyshawn Lee says it's simply not true. She said she did not use money donated to help pay for her son's funeral to buy a new car.

"Y'all don't know nothing about me," she said. "For y'all to be bashing me like that, and I just lost my child."

Lee is defending herself after heavy criticism on social media accusing her of using donated money from a GoFundMe page. While she admits to buying a car, she says she used her own money to make the down payment for the 2015 Chrysler 200.

The emotional 26-year old says she bought the car to protect herself so she wouldn't become a target by walking or taking the bus.

"I told them I was scared and I was fearing," she said. "Too bad if y'all don't understand that."

Lee said the controversy began after the dealership where she bought the car posted her purchase on Facebook without her knowledge. The post was deleted after negative reactions by supporters who donated.

"Once again, it just looks offsetting that out of nowhere you're driving around in a new car," said Aundra Lewis.

More than $17,000 dollars was raised in four days through the donation page, which was created by a friend of Lee's to "Help Karla lay her son to rest."

Police say Tyshawn Lee was lured into an alley and murdered Monday night because of his father's gang ties, which he denies.

A reward for information about the slaying is now over $54,000 thanks in part to Father Michael Pfleger.

"I'll do whatever I have to do to find out who the killer is and put him behind bars,"said Fr. Pfleger, St. Sabina Catholic Church.

Lee claims $13,000 remain in the account after she paid for some funeral expenses and GoFundMe took its percentage fee. Saturday, as she prepares to bury her son, she prays for justice and understanding.

"I'm just hoping that they find Tyshawn's killer," she said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting as police say their investigation is ongoing.

The funeral from Tyshawn Lee is schedule for Tuesday at St. Sabina Church.

As Tyshawn Lee's Mom Defends Car Purchase, Dad Sold T-Shirts Online:p
By DNAinfo Staff | November 8, 2015 10:43am

CHICAGO — As the mother of slain 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee denies allegations that she spent funeral donations on a new car, the boy's father was apparently asking for funeral money as well.

Karla Lee removed her Instagram and Facebook accounts after defending the purchase of a new car on Saturday, but some videos of her defending the car purchase remain online.

According to unverified Facebook posts Saturday, Lee had posted on Facebook that she had spent money from her son's GoFundMe page on the car, then deleted her account due to overwhelming negative reaction. DNAinfo Chicago could not independently confirm this Saturday afternoon.

She later told ABC Chicago that she used her own money for the car. The fundraiser was closed Sunday morning after raising more than $17,000.

In another bizarre twist, Tyshawn's father — whose gang ties police say led to his son's execution — appears to have started another GoFundMe page seeking donations for funeral expenses. The page was quickly taken down after comments criticizing the move flooded in.

"I understand the mother of my son did wrong by that money but what the news is not telling, that they are only paying for half the cost of everything," Wooh Gotti, an alias used by Tyshawn's dad Pierre Stokes, wrote on the page. "They are blaming us so they don't have to pay the full cost of everything. She is in the wrong for doing what she did with the money for our son, just give me a chance to lay my son to rest the right way."

The page asked for $2,500 and also was selling Tyshawn memorial t-shirts for $25-$45.

Tyshawn's funeral is set for Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Man Arrested In Execution-Style Killing Of 9-Year-Old Tyshawn Lee
November 27, 2015 6:45 AM

CHICAGO (CBS) — A 27-year-old man has been arrested in the execution-style shooting of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed Corey Morgan, of the 7800 block of South Hoyne Avenue, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Guglielmi did not provide further details on the arrest, but said police would have a formal announcement later Friday.

Morgan has been a person of interest from the start. Last week, he was arrested on a weapons charge in Oak Lawn, after police found him and another man with loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handguns.
