Kidnapping, rape suspect acquitted of similar sex crime in 2012

A Tallahassee man charged this week in a gun-point kidnapping and rape at an abandoned home is a suspect in another sexual assault that occurred earlier this month. He also skirted major prison time five years ago after being acquitted for a nearly identical crime in the same area.

Jermichael Lindsey, 31, was arrested Monday in connection with an Aug. 6 incident and faces seven counts of sexual assault with a firearm, kidnapping, battery with a firearm, aggravated assault, burglary of a dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and charges of violating his probation.

Lindsey remains in the Leon County Jail.

Lindsey, police say, forced a 23-year-old FAMU student into the trunk of a sedan outside her West Tallahassee apartment complex while brandishing a semi-automatic handgun and threatening to kill her.

The woman said he told her he’d been hired to kidnap her and had been “scoping out” her house for three days before he took her to a vacant mobile home on Tropicaire Street, just east of Jake Gaither Golf Course and raped her twice.

The woman said Lindsey eventually realized he'd abducted the wrong person and let her go. Police were able to match evidence on a piece of toilet paper at the scene to Lindsey’s DNA profile.

Lindsey's DNA was in the offender database because in 2010 he was charged for a strikingly similar crime in which he and another man were accused of abducting two women at gunpoint, one of them a 17-year-old girl, and taking them to a home near Jake Gaither Golf Course and then to a secluded area off Woodman of the World Road and raping them, court records say.

A jury, however, found both men not guilty on charges of kidnapping, sexual battery and armed robbery with a firearm after a two-day trial in 2012. Lindsey was sentenced to three years in prison for possession of a firearm.
